Maligned Iowa Officials Won't Attend Regent Review

By Becky Ogann

IOWA CITY (AP) - Two University of Iowa officials who received the harshest criticism in an independent review of a sexual assault case won't attend a meeting that will review their actions.

Phillip Jones and Marcus Mills caught the worst of a law firm's review of the university's response to the alleged assault in October that involved two former football players.

Neither will be at a meeting Thursday of the Iowa Board of Regents, which will discuss the review and decide what, if any, action to take. A university spokesman says Jones and Mills don't typically attend meetings.

These and other UI admins just like them are a disgrace to everything that higher learning institutions are supposed to be. Instead of creating an environment to foster learning and good citizenship, they have managed to create one of violence and deceit. These officials will try to hide behind their legal but unconscionable actions and lack of good judgement. One can only hope they are fired and never allowed to work in school administration again so as not to ruin more young lives.

The Regents need to send a strong message that while legal, these highly unethical practices from schools administrators will not be tolerated. Instead of doing what is the right thing for 99.9% of the students, they are catering to the needs of a tiny group of pampered athletes. Please remove these individual from positions of authority and find some persons with strong character and principles to replace them. The school and state will be better for it.

Of course they wouldn't show up, they have this false sense of entitlement like so many other admins at UI. Too many at the school feel they don't have to answer to anyone, especially citizens, and can operate in any manner they see fit. The school has completely lost touch with it's purpose which is to educate. They are willing to do anything & everything within the law to keep athletes out of jail so as not to upset rich alumni. I hope the Regents take a stand for what is right and just.

The cover up needs punished. Some leaders they are. The accused need to face the charges. Athletes are not special. The gal needs justice.

SHAME YOU THEM FOR THIS. A RAPE IS A CRIME AND JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE ATHLETES DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE ABOVE ANYONE. THEY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AS WELL AS THE UNIVERSITY PERSONEL.
