DES MOINES (AP) - Officials with a Web site that published land documents that contained Iowans' Social Security numbers say the site has been shut down.
Officials with IowaLandRecords.org say the action came after previous efforts failed to alleviate concerns about the private information posted at the site.
Since 2005, the Web site has provided online access to thousands of land records from all of Iowa's 99 counties. It is operated by the Iowa County Recorders Association.
Officials say index information to help researchers physically locate records at county recorder offices is all that's left on the Web site.
Phil Dunshee, a project manager for IowaLandRecords.org, says county recorders regret the disruption that shutting down the site will have on the real estate industry.
The Web site had drawn complaints from Gov. Chet Culver, watchdog groups and others who said that private information published there was inappropriate.
