DES MOINES (AP) - Administrators in Polk County have ordered 18 hybrid vehicles in an effort to save money on gasoline bills.

Officials say the 18 Ford Escape hybrids are being purchased as part of annual replacement of county vehicles and will replace Ford Tauruses sometime in early 2009.

Administrators haven't yet said how the sport-utility vehicles will be distributed to county workers.

Michael Grimaldi is head of Polk County's General Services Department. He says improved mileage on the hybrids is projected to save the county 7 cents for each mile driven - or about $6,300 for each vehicle over 90,000 miles.

If resale value estimates are right, officials say the savings could be closer to $9,000 on the hybrids.
