Washington Mayor Dies at Age 54

WASHINGTON (AP) - The mayor of the eastern Iowa city of Washington has died.

Rick Cicalo was 54.

City council member Merle Hagie says Cicalo, who had recently been diagnosed with cancer, died at home on Sunday.

Cicalo was elected to his first term in November 2005. He worked for downtown improvements and the city library.

Hagie says the mayor was also a talented bassist and played with such Iowa notables as Bo Ramsey.

Councilwoman Sandra Johnson, the mayor pro tem, is expected to take over for the rest of Cicalo's term or until a special election is held.
