KCRG-TV9 Coverage of the Kruziki Case: Autopsy says Matt Kruziki was Intoxicated

By Katie Wiedemann, Dubuque Reporter (originally aired May 2007)

EAST DUBUQUE - A toxicology report shows the Wisconsin man who drowned in the Mississippi River was legally intoxicated and had been smoking marijuana before he drowned.

Matthew Kruziki, 24, of Hartland, Wisconsin, disappeared from an East Dubuque bar early on the morning of Christmas Eve. In March, a sea plane pilot spotted his body in the river.

An autopsy found Kruziki drowned, but the coroner's inquest didn't reach any specific conclusions about the events that led up to his death. It's listed as undetermined.

Matt’s father, Bill Kruziki said, "It still leaves the door open at least in our mind that the police still need to do a little more work and get some folks interviewed so we can get a conclusion to the investigation."

East Dubuque police say they are still trying to figure out how Matt got into the river, and exactly what happened inside an East Dubuque bar that evening. Police Chief Steve O’Connell said, "The alcohol level is in the area of what we thought it might be because of the fact that officers did have contact with him that night. He didn't appear to be inebriated beyond where he wouldn't have been able to make conscious decisions. "

Bill Kruziki says he wants to know if someone forced his son into the river or if he walked in by mistake.
