MASON CITY (AP) - A northern Iowa man is recovering after a tree branch got stuck in his head.

The accident happened on Thursday when Gerald Mason, of Joice, was pushing a tree over with his tractor. The tree fell on him and the branch lodged in his head.

Mason called the Worth County sheriff's office to say he was driving himself to a hospital in Mason City, about 20 miles away.

The Iowa State Patrol stepped in and stopped him on his way to the hospital. Officials became concerned about his speed and the seriousness of his injury. Authorities called an ambulance to take Mason to the emergency room.

Patrol Lt. William Hon says the branch, which was broken off at the skin, was between Mason's left ear and left eye, along his hair line.

Mason was treated at the hospital and released.
