Debris Dumping After the Iowa City Tornado

By Josh Hinkle

It's not exactly a clean break. In fact, what you pick up after a tornado can be downright dirty.

The Iowa City Landfill has plenty of space for your debris dumping desires.
The F2 that ripped through Iowa City kept trucking companies busy. On Saturday, they scraped up the mess and dumped it at the landfill for a special one-time price: nothing!

Landfill worker Kevin Schmidt says, "You gotta pull together for the community and it's a special circumstance, that's for sure."

Worker Dwayne Uitermark says, "We're open later to try to accommodate the extra traffic."

The extra hour and a half kept trucks lining up. Truckers said they appreciate the extra convenience.

Nic McElneel says, "Just pull in and get out and go back for the next load and try to get rid of all this stuff."

The DNR gave the landfill special permission to bury yard waste and a lot of other uncommon debris as well.
