IOWA CITY - Debris wasn’t the only thing in the streets after the storms in Iowa City passed. Crowds of people gathered around the downtown area to see the damage left behind, but before any of the people got out of hand, the Iowa National Guard stepped in.
The guards helped block off streets and directed the groups of people away from danger. But even with their constant efforts to help out, some of the guards say this is the worst damage they’ve ever seen.
One guard commented that there were "a lot of gawkers." "There’s been a lot of damage,” he said, adding that people were trying to find and assess the destruction.
A guard reported that a group of guards even had to block off one particular area because of possible looting.
