MARION - After the flood, Jeri Spalding and her family went without a home for a month before moving into this one provided by FEMA in Squaw Creek Park.
She says, "Up until a week ago, it was hell, then it was great, having a week to call a place home, get the place situated, get the kids into a routine. And now we're going to a hotel, so we're back in hell."
Her mobile home might have mold growing behind the outside water heater panel. Jeri didn't take it off, because she worries about the health hazards to her eight-year-old.
"Well, with my daughter, she has asthma. It gets into her lungs, and she can't breathe, so she has to have an inhaler."
Her neighbor, Zach Sweet, took his off and did find mold inside. He also ripped away the nearby siding and found water seeping through the drywall.
Sweet says, "(It) may have been going on a little bit longer than the time we had been here, I guess."
FEMA says more than 200 homes, the ones with outside water heaters, are at risk.
The agency's spokesperson, Vincent Clark, tells TV9, "We're going to actually move them out. If they deem we should move them out, we're going to move them out and replace them with different units."
"FEMA offered to put up those flood victims in the Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids. Workers there just finished their own flood recovery efforts yesterday and opened back up. Families like the Spaldings appreciate the gesture, but they say this could be an even bigger hassle."
Jeri says, "Now we've got to one room for the four of us and our dog."
She wants to know why FEMA didn't catch this on its first inspection.
"I'd like that answer though. I'd really like that answer."
It could be a week before her new home is ready. But, she says, after this, she'll question the safety of any place FEMA provides.

Just a question. Did you get a choice of the trailer you want? Or the location

I just wonder how many of the people who have the battle cries of: "something for nothing", "leeching off the government, "hand-out for freebies" are crop farmers? Or the people who've conned their various insurance companies, and the ever popular, cheated on their taxes. I doubt very many of us could throw the 1st stone here-

I am in a FEMA trailer that has mold, and I along with a lot of other people that I know that are at the Crowne would rather clean it up ourselves or let FEMA clean it up and change the doors, as to have to move yet again. I have not heard one person at the Crowne complaining about FEMA or the mold. The person you all need to be screaming at is not us, but Patty Judge, she's the one that MADE us all move and is making FEMA pull the trailers out NOT the people living in them!!

Hey, "Need a new name", lots of us that were flooded aren't in a flood plain. Maybe the flood plain needs redrawn after this event but when we built the house we were assured that we weren't in a flood plain. Well, we bought the flood insurance anyway. Several neighbors were DENIED flood coverage by their insurers because they weren't in a flood plain. I tend to agree that if you are in the flood plain you should take what's coming but there were a lot of flood vitims not in the flood plain.

Why isn't anyone mentioning everyone's nanny, Patty Judge, here? She's the one who went ballistic making irrational decisions and demands in the middle of the night. Tell her to get a bottle of Clorox and start scrubbing.

Before you think that insurance is your solution, we're going to be out around $40,000 but so far the insurance company has only ponied up $18,000, and I had to fight them for even that amount! And on top of that our mortgage company won't let us have it. WE got the insurance, WE paid the premium, WE paid for the repairs, now THEY get the money?!

Ok I have been reading the comments. I have been in and out of the ER 3 times since april with asthma issues. It isn't fun.. NOT BREATHING HOWEVER.... my allergist said with the rains and weather.. even mowing the yard.. the clippings on top of clippings causes mold. FOR PETES SAKES PEEPS.. you and I both know if you have issues.. you have to do the extra mile to insure your safety.. not to look to others about them. If you rent a home you look and make sure there is no molds or toxins!!!!

In response to the birdbrain who goes by "here we go again!!", you are correct. No way in heck should any flood victim have the audacity to complain about mold and its deleterious effects on humans, particularly children. I mean, we all could use a little inhalation of mold every now and then right? Well, not the souls whom were never directly effected by the flooding. Sorry your mid-June T.V. shows of the catastrophes have desisted. Anyone for salt pouring over them "mold whiners" wounds? Loser

I would like to know that these FEMA employees that are making all these mistakes are being held responsible. Heaven forbid the government get posted in the news saying that the FEMA people responsible for their mistakes are paying the consequences. I think that is what people really want to hear. Right now FEMA keeps making mistakes one after another, from assaulting a local to being irresponsible with peoples personal information and now this, but have they been punished and fired??????????

Jim 5:40 pm summed it up best...fema GAVE you a home, if you are to lazy to clean it then don't accept anything from the government..what do people expect a new trailer?? I guarantee you if fema took the time to clean and polish these trailers people would wine because it took to long to get them up here. You cant win dealing with cedar rapidians. Why don't people just except what they are dealt with and make the best of it like my wife and I...God bless the flood victims like me and my family!

60% of you probably have some in your basements, behind drywall, behind the old freezer...it's not that big a deal unless your kid snorts it with his breakfast of lead paint chips. What a bunch of babies.

This knee-jerk reaction is our own fault. We ask government to take care of us and expect them to be perfect. Danged if you do and danged if you don't. I wouldn't work for the government at any price as long as people are the way the are now. What if you found mold in your "own" house? You gonna move or clean it up? Is it really too much to ask? I can't imagine losing everything I own to a flood, but neither can I imagine not having the courage to work a couple of things out myself.

I can take care of myself, what we need is fewer taxes, such as income tax, and get back to taking care of our self not punishing those who can stand up with pride and work to build a family.

Start the complaints, the Government wants to, and tries to help, and people will complain. All those who don't like it, tell FEMA to take a hike, and you can take care of yourself.

wow they are trying to get you sick like the formaldehyde in the hurricane Katrina mobile homes. It is sad all these victims paid so much money in taxed over the years, now when they need help the government treats them like dirt. The US did not always have an income tax.... If we had the ability to save our money or prepare our selves I think we could do much better. I think I can spend my money better than some pencil pusher. The roads are paid for by tax on the gas I buy, i'm ok with that.

Really, let's cut the hysteria over mold. Mold can grow ANYWHERE there is moisture. When I moved into my home the previous owners had disconnected the dehumdifer and there was mold growing in the basement. A washdown with bleach, a new dehumidifer and problem solved. I suppose a tiny percentage of the population may be hypersensitive to mold, but let's get real, it's not going to harm most people. Clean it up, dry it up and go on. Jeez.
