Former Director of Northwood Group is Sentenced

NORTHWOOD (AP) - The former director of a northern Iowa community group has received a 10-year suspended sentence and probation for stealing from the organization.

A Worth County judge sentenced Ben Hengesteg after he pleaded guilty to first-degree theft.

The 28-year-old had worked for nearly three years as director of Totally United Northwood Effort. The group works for the betterment of Northwood, a community north of Mason City.

Hengesteg was accused of taking nearly $20,000. He admitted to overpaying himself and misrepresenting financial statements to the group's board of directors.

In addition to the suspended sentence, he received three years probation.

Hengesteg now lives in Ankeny.
