This intersection should have been taken care of when the 4 lane was constructed in the late 90s, but what I remember is that they thought the intersection was going to be safer with 4 lanes instead of 2. Whether they build the new high school on the road or not they need to fix it NOW! It needs to be gone, let people take the long way around, what's an extra few minutes to get where you're going.

3:04 Anamosa Resident is right: there is some sort of optical thing going on there...it's VERY hard to tell which lane a vehicle coming at you is in, and it's also hard to judge the distance because of the curve. The intersection itself is the problem, and the DOT just doesn't want to admit it or spend the money to fix it. They are the people who need to step it up!

The intersection needs to be redesigned, plain and simple. Those who think you can "just install a light" are wrong...that would probably cause more accidents from people going from 65 to 0 in a matter of seconds. Think before you post.

It makes me sick to read comments blaming the elderly or people saying "maybe she should have been looking". go buy a hat with a capital L on the front and stop posting negative comments. There is obviously a problem with this stretch of road.

"Deceased Driver Identified in Jones County Crash" How does a deceased person drive a car in the first place?

I don't understand how people can be so cruel. If you are going to speak your mind then please at least have the courage to leave your name. To Reality Check in Anamosa, do you understand that family reads these comments? It truely amazes me how awful people can be. It was an accident and should be left at that!

For all of you saying that it was the drivers fault and shame on the driver and that nothing needs to be done because nothing has happened to you... I want you to think about this: Gena Bonifazi lived and drove on that intersection for 40 plus (probably more) years as well. She had taken it just as many, probably more than any of you. It is simply a dangerous intersection. My heart goes out to all families and people who have been injured here. The IDOT NEEDS to do something!

I live near that intersection and I travel it daily. I have almost been hit myself and I am not an elderly driver or a teenager. There is an optical illusion. With the way the curve is banked and the turning lane, it is very difficult to tell exactly what lane the oncoming cars are in. You may think an oncoming vehicle is in the far lane and the lane closest to you is empty and it is safe to pull out. Many times that is not the case. I realize this and take extra care there.

I think they need to lower the speed limit on that section of 151 to 55mph and actually inforce it. I drive on that road frequently and there are many who drive a lot faster than 65mph. Also with all of the motorcycles going to and from J&P cycles, it would be more safe to lower the speed limit.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY OF VIVIAN (MAXINE) PRESTON. I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. I AM THE DAUGHTER OF REGINA BONIFAZI, WHO DIED AT THIS INTERSECTION 3 WEEKS AGO. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THE DAY OF MY MOTHERS ACCIDENT AND WILL NEVER TRUELY KNOW. WAS IT THE SUN,DID THE SIDE OF THE SEMI APPEAR AS A BILLBOARD IN THE DISTANCE, MISJUDGEMENT, ETC? PLEASE CLOSE THIS INTERSECTION. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR OF ANOTHER "ACCIDENT" AT THIS LOCATION. NO ONE ELSE SHOULD HAVE TO SUFFER A LOSS.

Davey and Sonya are correct, Aunt Maxine was truly a very caring and delightful person. She will be missed by many. This intersection sounds dangerous so the flashing signal probably would help. Driver awareness on 151 would not hurt anything. Oh yes - Ms Susie - On your 87th birthday you will proceed to the DOT office and turn in your license? Is that right?

Monday, Jul 14 at 12:01 PM Anonymous wrote ...

For some reason this is a bad intercestion. I don't think stopping traffic on 151 is the answer. The best solution is to shut it down and make drivers use the ramp. After all, that is why the ramps are there. This has been a bad place for MANY years!

No one under 57 has been injured?? 3 years ago my husband, 3 kids and I were injured at that intersection. (All of us were under 40)We were driving Southbound on 151 and a woman pulled out right in front of me from Old Dubuque Rd. I slammed into her driver's side, thank God she was not killed. We were all injured, though. Then people started telling me what a dangerous intersection that is.I get sick to my stomach whenever I drive past that site. But how else can you get to Wisconsin?

Monday, Jul 14 at 11:04 AM Concerned Anamosa Parent wrote ...

I am a parent in Anamosa and have grave concern over the new high school being built near this intersection. I currently have 3 teenagers who I consider pretty good drivers but we all know the poor judgment most teenagers have, especially when with peers. I drive old Dubuque road every day without incident but I still think something needs to be done or this intersection needs to be shut completely. I absolutely do not think this is a wise location for a high school!!!

Monday, Jul 14 at 10:24 AM DO NOT close this intersection! wrote ...

How many of you actually have sat on Dubuque Street where this accident occured? There is absolutely no reason this accident should have happened. There is nothing blocking the view of either driver it is a clear open roadway, it's not the intersection that is the problem, it is the carelessness of drivers plain and simple.

Monday, Jul 14 at 9:54 AM Dave wrote ...

how about making it an inbound only(to Anamosa). Not an entrance to U.S.151.

Monday, Jul 14 at 9:47 AM Anonymous wrote ...

The info on no one younger than 57 injured is wrong. The intersection is dangerous and it is difficult for people to judge the speed of oncoming traffic. I hope this is corrected before the high school is built. Statistically there is no difference between a young driver with new license and older ones.

I am family of Gena's. My thoughts and prayers to the family of the Mrs Preston. I have mixed feeling on these postings. As an outsider it may be easy to discount this as nothing more than "elderly persons" making mistakes. I can not speak for Mrs. Preston, but I can speak for Gena. She was a very sharp person, with the life of a twenty year old. We can all agree that this is a dangerous intersection. My plea is that the State would take note. (4) deaths here in 24 months...

To all those people making comments about it being the lady's fault, and implying that due to this she somehow deserved it, you're despicable. Can you honestly say that in all your life you have never made any sort of mistake or been in an any type of accident that was avoidable. I love how being able to post something on here instantly gives someone the courage to say something they wouldn't in a normal conversation. A dearly beloved woman lost her life, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Monday, Jul 14 at 8:25 AM Anonymous wrote ...

The intersection needs shut down, plain and simple. For those that use it daily, what's an extra 4 minutes to use the exit ramp and go around?? While I have/do use it myself, I would have no problem having to use the ramps. I will bet anybody out there that wants to argue that this will not be the last fatality at that intersection.

By the way KCRG, please list her as the right age, she was 87, not 81..... She was born in 1921

Yeah that intersection really sucks. In all the years I lived in Anamosa its always been really bad. It doesnt matter what someones age is. Something really should be done about that. Maybe a stop light or something. With two people getting killed on the same intersection in less than a month I think that raises up a red flag

I agree you can see the oncoming traffic before you enter the highway BUT on the otherhand there has been WAY too many accidents there in the past few months and years! I travel that road daily to and from work and I definately slow down knowing that is a bad intersection, along with the Springville intersection. Springville now has a crossroads sign, something needs to be done at the Anamosa intersection. I agree the stop light would be great! My sympathy as well goes out to the family.

I've lived around this area all my life and for 40 years I've rolled up to this stop sign looked both ways and proceeded out onto the highway without incident, you can clearly see in both directions. The way I see it is folks have a hard time putting blame where it belongs.I mean really if there's a car coming which you can clearly see don't pull out in front of it.If i'm coming down the road and this happens blame the intersection blame myself?Driver that pulled out in front is to blame, sorry

The City of Anamosa should not have to bear the burden of how to correct this intersection. The IDOT designed it, they can take the necessary steps to make it safe. I'm still in favor of the new school being built on the adjacent ground; so far no one younger than 57 has been injured at this intersection.

Sunday, Jul 13 at 7:55 PM TO ANONYMOUS wrote ...

If you have ever been at this intersection you would know how dangerous it really is and you can't see all that well. Regina Bonifazi was not just an elderly woman who needed her driving restricted. She was healthy, a good driver and sharper than a tack! THIS is WHY they are called ACCIDENTS! Gena had taken this intersections a million times in her life. This has always been a dangerous intersection. SOMETHING has to be done before someone else dies in less than a month!

I agree this is a horrible intersection and with the new high school in the works something needs to be done so we dont have more fatalities. Sympathy to the family

Sunday, Jul 13 at 6:47 PM Perhaps a flashing Light wrote ...

How about adding a flashing yellow light and sign that says turning traffic ahead??? This would at least alert the drivers on 151 that there may oncoming turning traffic. At least than they would be a little more aware or alert at this curve/turn. How many more people need to be killed or seriously hurt before the county/city does something? My heart goes out to the family of this woman!

Sunday, Jul 13 at 6:14 PM Anamosa Resident wrote ...

I live near that intersection. Maybe this will convince the city that a stop light needs to be installed there especially if the new high school is going to be built near by.

Time to start restricting the driving privilleges of the elderly. If you can't see a SEMI on the road how can you see a car with a family in it? Do people understand that just because you stopped at the stop sign does not mean you can pull out on the highway and the other traffic will just get the heck out of your way? Stop and then proceed when clear!!

Sunday, Jul 13 at 12:17 PM Mike in Marion wrote ...

Again the story starts out reading as though the truck driver is to blame. It isn't untill the third paragraph that we find out that the driver of the car pulled out in front of the semi. If you look up the stats from the insurance companies the four wheelers are at fault in nearly 75% of all truck/four wheeler collisions. I guess I am tired of truck drivers being treated as the scourge of the planet.

Regina Bonifazi was killed here too on June 19th. She was a good woman with 12 children. How many more deaths will it take before this intersection is closed? What do you think her family will think when they read this article?
