DES MOINES (AP) - Des Moines police have arrested a man who they say murdered two people in their homes.

Richard Mutchler is being held in Polk County Jail on two charges of first-degree murder.

He was released from prison just 11 days ago, having served a sentence for operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

Stanley Long's body was found Thursday morning. Charlene Gorden was found dead in her Des Moines apartment hours later. Police say both died of stab wounds.

Mutchler was identified Thursday night as a person of interest in the murders.

He was later arrested after he allegedly carjacked and beat a man.

Police investigating that incident then realized Mutchler matched the description of a suspect wanted in connection with the murders.

Mutchler's bond is set at $1 million.
