State Vision Iowa Grants Announced

By Shannon Booth

DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver says nearly $3 million in grants has been awarded to four projects as part of the state's Vision Iowa program.

Culver says the projects will give residents and visitors new recreational and educational opportunities.

Culver's office says $45,000 was awarded to a park shelter project in Birmingham. Another $325,000 was awarded for a Children's Discovery Center in Clinton.

In Postville, $850,000 was awarded to a project adding an addition to the city's existing recreation center.

The project getting the highest grant award was a rail-to-trail
conversation project that will start in Ankeny and run 25 miles to Woodward. It was awarded $1.75 million.

The grants are contingent on the projects completing their fundraising goals.

We don't need these projects. Don't raise our taxes paid with our money for things the people don't want. Take care of rebuilding from disasters and taking better/faster care of the homeless from the disasters.

I just wanted to comment on what our tax dollars are being spent on. I for one would like to have a house to go home to, but don't do to the flood. I can't get SBA loan because I have a morgage that needs to be paid for first so guess what we have no place to call home. Like so many other people we are not the only ones in this boat. I think that we should take care of all the people that were affected by the flood before we spend the money on any of these projects. Just a thought.

It's called a rail-to-trail conversion project (ie: the popular Cedar Valley Nature trail) Building anything with tax-payer money is a waste. There should be nothing enjoyable to do in Iowa if it is funded with tax-payer money. End sarcasm here.

Why can't Birmingham build their OWN park shelter project? Who owns the Children's Discovery Center in Clinton and why should they get $325,000 of our money? Why can't Postville build their OWN addition to their rec center? Why should gov't & taxpayers be paying for our entertainment & recreation in the first place? What is a "rail-to-trail conversation" and why should we spend $1.75 million on it? Don't we have better uses for this money?

Do we need ANY of these things? Why is our government confiscating our money in the form of taxes and giving it to "conversation" projects? We have citizens rendered homeless and bankrupt due to floods and are peeing millions of dollars away on pork projects that many of them helped pay these taxes for!
