Ok, would anyone really get uptight if the dog in question was just an ordinary mutt? No. It had to be said in the story that it was a pit. Most of the pits I know are loving dogs. Its mainly in how the animal is raised. How many little yippy dogs are aggressive? Nearly every one that I have seen. I own 2 rotties, and people are afraid of them just by their looks. However, neither would hurt a fly. My best friend is a big biker guy, and he was nervous around them. All they want is some loving.

I bet if they look into it further it probly wasn't the first time the dog bit someone. My son was attacked by just standing 5 ft near a dog. The dog was taken for a 5 day evaluation, then released back to the owner. The dog had previoulsy attacked other kids, and adults. I was so upset after they kept the dog and didn't put it down because of it's previous history.

As a PET OWNER, it is your responsibility to keep your pet on YOUR property. If you aren't home, keep the pet indoors or kenneled. Build and maintain a fence that keeps the pet IN YOUR OWN YARD so things like this don't happen. Why should it be up the mayor to make sure your pet doesn't bite someone? YOU own the pet, YOU take care of it, or take the consequences. The mayor or the police shouldn't have to take care of YOUR pet!

Do any of you people supporting this really want your "overlords" having the right to illegally trespass on your property and illegally shoot something of yours, based on hearsay nonetheless? Where does such authority stop? People's rights were obviously violated in this situation and the mayor should be guilty of a number of crimes. For goodness sake what if he had accidentally shot a child or something? That was serious recklessness and ignorance. He's lucky he didn't get shot by the owner to.

The article doesn't say he just walked up to the owners property and shot the dog after hearing it had bit a kid. It says he went to the owners home and shot the dog after the dog acted aggressively. So the owner was warned about a previous incident, then the dog bit a kid, then it acted aggressively toward the mayor. I think he was justified! Wish more small town mayors would deal with problems quickly. It can take forever to get a cop here!

If you shoot my pet because it got out, then my pet would not be the only thing that needs burying. If you don't want to live next to a dog, then move somewhere else, or build and maintain a fence that keeps all animals out of your yard. Even a good pet owner has had a pet that has gotten loose sometime.

It doesn't matter what breed the dog may or may not have been. ANY dog can be aggressive. My neighbor had an aggressive Lab and you don't normally hear about them biting or being aggressive. The only difference is a Pit Bull has more muscle mass and more power behind their bite, which makes any aggressive act that much more damaging. It all comes down to how they are raised and the training they receive. I agree that the owner was irresponsible and it's unfortunate for the dog and child.

What-are we back in the old west now? A mayor "running" his or her town? This moron acted on HEARSAY, overstepped his bounds and shot an animal on private property without even involving law enforcement. He should be removed from office immediately and charged with animal cruelty. And for all the pit bull haters-ANY BREED can be made to bite and be aggressive with no training and a neglectful/abusive environment. Why don't you educate yourselves about the breed before you judge?

A for the mayor, in small town Iowa, most times, it's up to the mayor to deal with issues like this. He was acting to protect his town, most time it is in their "job descriptions", do they like it? Do they get paid most times for even being the mayor in a small town? No. Maybe for you people complaining, do something about it, get on your town's council, run for mayor, etc, don't sit on here and complain about how a mayor runs his/her town!

Where in the story does it say the dog was a pit bull? I'm a long time dog owner and have yet to meet a mean pit bull. Yes, the breed does show aggression but that can be controlled through proper attention and training. It's crappy dog owners that have mean, aggressive animals. Don't blame the breed-blame the owner for improper training, control and neglect. But since when does a mayor have police powers to wield a weapon and shoot a dog on private property on the basis of hearsay?

The dog wasn't in the process of attacking the child. This was after the fact that the MAYOR HEARD that the dog bit a child and then shot the dog, on the OWENERS PORPERTY. There are laws and procedures that are to be followed concerning aggressive animals. The mayor is not above these laws. He should have called the authorities and had them deal with the situation because now he's just an idiot with a gun. What if he shot the wrong dog? Or hit a person? I also hope that understanding goes the same direction as I would do the same if a dog came into my yard and bit my child as I would shoot it as well. As far as the mayor going to the owners home and shooting the dog after the fact I am sure there are some legal issues there as it was after the fact it should have involved law enforcement or animal control.
Tuesday, Jul 8 at 2:54 PM Christin wrote ...
Since when is it the major's right to shoot someone else's animal? He could have had the law remove the animal from the dog-owner's custody, but going to the residency and shooting the dog himself is out of line. I think law enforcement should have something to say about this, and hopefully react. The major's job doesn't entail going above the law. Who's to say the child's parent(s) could not have gone over and shot the dog. Absolutely ridiculous.

Aren't there procedures in place when it comes to dealing with dangerous animals? I honestly doubt that this dog was an immediate threat. It bit the ankle of a child, it didn't tear a limb off. The dog was probably more of an inconvenient nuisance than a danger to the community. Wouldn't know. The story doesn't say, so I can only speculate. I do know that a mayor shooting a dog is just weird.

the child was 7 and riding his or her bike to the post office and was bit on the ankle. The child did get stiches. The dog was a mix breed pit bull and was 200 yards from his/her house.
