Linn County Estimates Flooding Damage to County Buildings, Roads

By Bree'Ann Hildreth

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - Linn County officials say that last month's flooding caused an estimated $45 million in damage to county buildings, equipment and roads.

That's nearly half of the county's annual budget.

Officials say it could take up to a year to restore the Linn County jail and the sheriff's office.

Supervisor Linda Langston hopes to have parts of the county courthouse operating within two months, but she says that's a best case scenario.

Langston says opening the county's administrative services building - home to the supervisors, treasurer, recorder, auditor and others - is a lower priority.

She says officials haven't even decided whether they'll move back in to the building.

How much is our taxes going to go up to cover these repairs? Are they going to be cost effective in doing so?

Linn County has done on outstanding job supporting the community during this difficult time. They have been providing people with funding for needed resources. Compared to many other counties, we have it good here.

And they hired an out of town contractor to do the work. And after the bid he wanted more money!!!I wonder what it will cost to correct the work after they are paid and gone.

in response to wrong, keep that in mind this November, almost perfect timing to keep fresh why we need to change politicians as often as diapers. Besides I think they'd be better off remodeling the old Von Maur at westdale to suit their needs.

What nobody hears about is the truth, came from a member of the sheiff's dept. The supevisors demanded their offices be the highest priority even over the jail. So we are paying to house inmates at these other 4 locations while they work on fixing the jail, which isn't even at the top of the priority list. As he put it, Moe, Larry, and Curly have to have their offices done before everything else. Maybe its time for some new Linn County supervisors.
