We have our pets at shelter that will be closing within a week. We know that it is not possible to keep this service running for ever, but we were only givin one week to find a foster home for our pets. This isn't enough time when you have to also deal with all the fema, sba, ins and other stuff. Our children have lost everything else they have ever known and now their pets will be shipped to other states for adoption. Most pet owners want their pets, theres just no time to save them :(

Hey skatman01, is that meant to be a racist comment? If so, you are the one who needs to move out of the area.

Nothing in this article says that these are dogs from Cedar Rapids, only "Iowa and Illinois". The Kirkwood Shelter is giving the owners of remaining dogs every opportunity to be reunited with their owners. Tomorrow (Saturday) there is an adoption day for cats, and one would assume an adoption day for dogs will follow later on. The CVHS issued a statement asking for foster families to care for the remaining dogs and cats until they can be reunited with their owners. Please help if you can.

Where are the owners of these abandoned animals, are they not claiming them? I could not bear the fact that my animals are out there somewhere in need of me to take care of them. I would be checking everywhere to find them, they are part of my family, not some throw away after thought. People try to seek out your poor animals in these shelters, who knows they might be there.

Let us support any effort being made to find flood victimized animals a new home, but only after every effort has been made to reunite them with their former owners. It's a daunting task to say the least, but it can be done.

Last I heard the original dogs from the shelter were allowed to be adopted. The only ones not being allowed to adopt out were ones that had not been surrenderd or claimed yet. In fact several of the press releases even said to come out an adopt a pet. I am not a fan of Sgt Choate either, but are you certain you have your facts straight? It sounds like the foster homes are needed for the dogs who have been claimed but not able to go home. Have you signed up to do that? Check the press release.

Why are these dogs able to be adopted and the ones at Kirkwood are not. Some of the dogs at Kirkwood have been surrendered by their owners and some were from the shelter but these dogs are not being allowed to be adopted as well as all the others waiting for a loving home. People have even offered to foster home these dogs but that isn't being allowed either. I applaude the efforts of the volunteers there at Kirkwood for their time and patience but it's time to find these dogs a home!!
