CRESTON (AP) - An interim police chief has been named in Creston, where the former chief and assistant chief were fired after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman.

Brian Burkhalter has served as a police officer with the Creston Police Department since 1999.

Creston Mayor Warren Woods made the announcement on Wednesday. He says the search now begins for the permanent chief.

Former Chief James Christensen and John Sickels, the former assistant chief, were fired last month after they each were charged with second-degree sexual abuse.

Investigators allege that Sickels raped a woman behind the bar of the Crestmoor Golf Club on April 18 while Christensen stood by.
