Waverly to Build New School Because of Flooding

WAVERLY (AP) - Students at Waverly-Shell Rock's Washington-Irvine Elementary School will have all new classrooms when they start school this fall.

The school was flooded when the Dry Run Creek flowed over its banks earlier this month.

Superintendent Jere (Jerry) Vyverberg says the building is unusable so the school board has decided to move the school to the Willow Lawn Mall in Waverly.

Vyverberg says crews will have to build new walls and classrooms in time for school to start on August 21.

Damage to the school is estimated at nearly $4 million.

The school has about 250 fifth- and sixth-grade students and 35 staff members.

Vyverberg says that besides building a new school, many items in the current building were contaminated by flood water and have to be replaced.
