CEDAR RAPIDS - Nearly 50 ducks were killed at the Bever Park Zoo in Cedar Rapids. Park employees say someone broke into the Zoo Tuesday night and killed the birds.
The vandals broke into two gates and took stones from the landscaping there at the Duck habitat and killed a half of the population there.
You can see here how big some of the stones are. Some were killed as they tried to escape in the water, some in their cage.
The ducks cost about $50 apiece. They were different varieties form around the U.S.
The parks superintendent says the real loss is the free recreational opportunity.
"Well it's tough. Vandalism is senseless. It's cowardly because these people don't stand out defiantly they come in the, under the cover of darkness and they don't leave very much evidence," said Dave Smith, Parks Superintendent.
They will replace the ducks. But it might be until September until they get new ducks. The vandalism has been reported to the police. The parks superintendent estimates it would take a few people about an hour to do the damage.
