CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Police have arrested the first looter in downtown Cedar Rapids.
On Thursday afternoon, Cedar Rapids Police Officer Chip Joecken and Iowa State Patrol Officer Chris Barber were actively patrolling in the downtown area when an Attempt to Locate was broadcast on their radio for a vehicle involved in looting.
The vehicle in question was a black Ford Explorer with Colorado plates. Moments later, Trooper Barber spotted this vehicle parked in the 400 blk 1 St SE. When officers approached this vehicle, they found a male driver in the vehicle that was waiting for a friend. This friend came out of Muddy Waters carrying bottles of alcohol. Officers identified her as Michelle Points, 36, of 236 29 Ave SW. Points stated that she owned the bar and was retrieving items to be salvaged.
Officers were able to verify that Points indeed did not own Muddy Waters or Konstantino's and were able to retrieve items from the vehicle that appeared to belong to Muddy Waters. Officers also retrieved items from Points' home that she voluntarily gave back to officers. Points was arrested for Theft 1 and transported to the Hinzman Center where Linn County Jail is located at at the moment.
This is the first looter that the Cedar Rapids Police Department has located and that was with the help of the Iowa State Patrol. It is because of cooperation from all of the law enforcement agencies and the public's support that we have been able to keep the looting to a minimum.
