By KCRG Intern

The Jones County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of an anhydrous ammonia leak at the River Valley Coop Elevator in Martelle in rural Jones County. The leak was the result from an attempted theft of anhydrous from a portable tank. Approximately 40 residents on South Street in Martelle were evacuated to the fire station as a precaution while the fire department contained the leak and were able to shut the tank off. At 4:45am, the residents were allowed to return to their homes. One Martelle firefighter did receive minor injuries and was transported by Anamosa Area Ambulance to Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa where he was treated and released. Assisting the Jones County Sheriff's Department were Martelle Fire and First Responders, Anamosa Area Ambulance Service, Morley Fire and first responders and employees of River Valley Coop.
