CEDAR RAPIDS - Early Monday morning the city of Cedar Rapids changed its re-entry plan for flood-affected areas of the city.
The city now says that Sunday officials found unsafe conditions and significant hazards in homes they entered. Therefore, home and business owners will not be allowed to enter any areas within the affected areas on Monday, June 16th.
The city says it wanted to accomodate homeowners, but the hazards are more severe than anticipated. The city will also no longer allow business owners in the downtown area skywalk access.
Quaker Oats, Cargill, and Penford will be allowed access to address possible hazardous material dangers to the community and structural integrity. Personnel will be accompanied by area hazardous materials specialists.
On Monday, strike teams will continue to assess flood affected properties. The flooded areas have been divided into sectors. Officers of the Iowa National Guard along with the Cedar Rapids Police Department are securing the perimeter of each area.
Beginning Monday afternoon, property owners will be able to access information regarding the status of their property. Residential and commercial properties will be identified as safe or unsafe to enter. Lists of properties that have been inspected and their entry status are available by the following three methods:
1. Call 2-1-1
2. Log on to www.CorridorRecovery.org
3. View hard copy lists distributed to area Post Offices
The next day property owners will be allowed to enter the perimeter to temporarily access their property if it has been identified as safe for entry.
