To whomever made the United Fire comment, its hard to stay and work when there is no power and water is in the building. It hasnt even been a week and I am sure plans are being made to get UFG going again ASAP here too. That is what they do and what every company should do.

Here is the link for the 500 year floodplain. Darker color is 500 year, lighter color is 100 year. Do NOT rely on a map to determine whether or not you will be safe! These are just projections based on computer models and many things can influence the water height.

Apparently the gas & electric companies didn't design their shutoff areas to match the flood plains. If they shut off your gas because you're close by, you are probably just on the same service as others. If you think about it, this is really stressing the emergency people. I know it's hard not to criticize when faced with your situation, but they are doing the best they can to keep everyone safe.

Some of you people on here make me a little sick. Calm down, and take a moment to really think. Mandatory means that you MUST. Stay out of emergency crews' ways, and if you're not helping, stay out of the way. Criticizing isn't helping anyone. God/Alla/Muhammed, whomever you pray to helps those who will help themselves.
Thursday, Jun 12 at 3:03 PM Please evacuate when you're asked! wrote ...
If you're asked to evacuate, please just do it! Don't think you can "ride it out." They're doing it for a reason! I feel for the emergency workers who are having to spend all their time performing emergency rescues when the people in those areas had been asked to evacuate. I used to live in Cedar Rapids and it is just heartbreaking to see the images of the flooding. I would hate to see reports of lives lost when people should just seek safe shelter when they're asked to!!

United Fire is closed? Those weather wimps! We'll see how they respond to this after they cricitized their Galveston, TX office for not re-opening quickly enough after Hurricane Rita. Now, they'll find out first hand what those heroic southerners went through during two major hurricanes. This is nothing compared to that....and they got rid of some really good people who could have helped them navigate through this.

I was wondering about the summer of 1993 (or whenever it happened) and if tornadoes and the other crazy weather we are having ACROSS THE USA was the same. Apparently the average number of tornadoes and tornado deaths for this season have already reached the average numbers and it's only just begun! Was 1993 just rain? Or did we also have all of these tornadoes and they're not exactly small, there are records all over the US, F5, F4 tornadoes...

usually it's only a problem if the creek is connected to the major water ways (cedar river, then Mississippi then ocean), BUT if you are in the evacuation area (which could likely expand!) then you should get stuff ready just in case, I have a feeling it will get much higher...and the evacuation area will keep growing, better safe than sorry...

If the blackoutline means that people are to evacuate the possible flood area. Can you help me out here and probably 200 people. Why was it when they shut down City Hall, the Linn County Courthouse and the Third Ave Bridge was not the inmates in the Linn County Jail evacuated also. All the sandbagging in the world and having a building that is 4 stories high sitting in the middle of that island is safe from all this flood water.

"A 100 or 500 year flood plain does not mean that it will flood that far only once ever 100 or 500 years" It doesn't, you mean they can't forecast the future and say if it happens now it won't happen for 499 more years??? Thanks for the 7th grade probability lesson. Then again, most people don't know what percentage 5/6 is.

A 100 or 500 year flood plain does not mean that it will flood that far only once ever 100 or 500 years. It means that there is a 1% or greater annual probability of flooding over 1 foot in the designated area. And a 0.2% or greater annual probability in the 500 year zone. In other words, a 1 in 100 or 1 in 500 chance, every year, of flooding in those areas.
