Mandatory Evacuation Likely in Cedar Rapids Neighborhoods

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS - The following info is being distributed door to door in the areas potentially affected by the floods in the Time Check Neighborhood, Osborne Park Neighborhood, Cedar Valley Neighborhood and Czech Village Neighborhood.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR AN EVACUATION?
Based on the National Weather Service prediction of the Cedar River cresting at 22.0’ from Wednesday, June 11 at 4:00 AM thru Monday, June 16 at 4:00 AM, there is a strong probability that there will be a MANDATORY evacuation of the Time Check Neighborhood and Osborne Park Neighborhood. This is based on the current forecast for rainfall but would be affected with additional rainfall.

Why would I need to evacuate?
The need to evacuate certain homes and businesses is based on many factors. The main reasons for evacuation are health conditions from floodwaters, citizen safety related to flood conditions and electrical shut offs. MidAmerican will be shutting off gas service due to the potential of water getting into the gas line on Tuesday, June 10, at 2:00 PM. If you are in the evacuation area, you MUST evacuate your home.

How can I know if I am part of the mandatory evacuation?
If the floods affected your home in 1993, your home will more than likely be affected by this flood. You can look at the Cedar Rapids City Website for a map of the affected area at http://www.cedar-rapids.org/community/floodinfo2008.asp.

How will I be notified of the evacuation?
You are receiving this flyer because you live in an area that has a high probability of a mandatory evacuation. If the evacuation goes into effect, you will be notified through the media (TV and radio), through an automated phone call and door to door by city officials. You will be given a time limit in which you must be out of your home.

Where are the evacuation centers?
The Red Cross will be utilizing Roosevelt Middle School at 300 13th St NW for those affected in Cedar Rapids. Additional Red Cross Sites will be opened if needed.

What if I don’t have transportation?
City buses will be available for transportation once the mandatory evacuation has been issued. Information on pickup locations will be available at that time depending on the affected areas. Citizens are encouraged to plan ahead on where they are going to go during the evacuation and how they are going to get there. If you know you will be needing transportation to one of the shelters, please call 286-5770 and give your name, address, phone number and any special needs that you have.

What if I have special needs? (handicapped/on oxygen/bedridden)
If you have special needs, please call Linn County Public Health at 319-892-6000.

What do I need to take with me?
-Medicine that you will need through Monday, June 16.
-Important documents that you would need.
-Clothing and personal hygiene items

Know where you are going and how you are going to get there.

How can I prepare for the evacuation?
Move any important items from your basement to an area that you feel will not be affected by floodwater. Start bringing those items up today, as you may not have time when the evacuation goes into effect.

How do I know if it is safe to return home?
The City will utilize the media to relay information to those affected by the evacuation. City officials will issue a press release when it is safe for citizens to return to their homes.
