BREMER COUNTY - The City of Waverly is issuing a flood warning for the Cedar River through Waverly.
Utilizing information released by the National Weather Service, as of 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2008, Waverly officials are predicting major flooding along the Cedar River in Waverly with a crest of 17.2 feet on the evening of Tuesday, June 10. The projected crest is higher than the 1999 flood crest of 16.8 feet.
This will be a 100-year flood event. The areas of impact are those defined on the Flood Insurance Rate Map for a 100-year flood event. This map is available for viewing on Waverly’s website of
www.waverlyia.com.
For those concerned about potential property damage caused by flooding, the City of Waverly is making available sand bags and sand at multiple locations throughout the community. To find a sand bagging location or to volunteer, contact Public Services at 352-6247 or go to 412 1st Ave. SE (Recycling Center area). City staff will direct volunteers to go where they are needed most.
Residents in the floodplain are encouraged to secure their homes and be prepared to vacate the area Monday evening going into Tuesday. We anticipate major portions of the City that are prone to flooding will be closed to public access beginning Monday evening.
The flood warning will remain in effect until waters fall below flood stage. If you live in a threatened area along the Cedar River, be alert for rising water and be prepared to take any necessary precautions.
Road Closings and Information—Two emergency access roads are opening in Waverly. Emergency access for Murphy Addition is open at Horton Road and 5th St. NE. Emergency access for the Jahnke Addition is open at 10th Avenue and 4th Street SW.
Residents who are not in the affected areas are advised to stay out of the flooded areas to allow emergency personnel to work. Do not drive through water covered roadways.
Utilities—If you live in low lying areas you should be prepared for your power to be out for the duration of the flood. Waverly Light and Power will be shutting power down in affected areas as the water rises. Waverly Light and Power personnel are working to ensure the safety of persons dealing with electrical issues. Residents will not be notified before their power is turned off.
Sewer backups are possible.
When your power is out, your refrigerator will keep food edible for 24 hours. Try not to open it except as absolutely necessary.
Shelters—The Red Cross is operating a shelter at UNI’s West Gym. Individuals with medical needs may go to Waverly Health Center. They should access the hospital off of 2nd Avenue SW, park in the orange lot and use the orange entrance. Accommodations are available in Outpatient Surgery.

Donna - Downtown (Bremer Ave) is flooded. The Hyvee is open, but the entire downtown is closed off. Vague is a good way to describe the flooding outside of downtown. The water is in collecting many places, and is tough to characterize. I beleive the water was supposed to crest at roughly 19.3 inches. As of yesterday (Tues) AM it was at 19.1. Hope this helps.

My heart goes out to all the folk in the flood areas. I had a wonderful few days holiday in your region back in 1998 and 2000 staying with friends in the flood prone region. My prayers are with you all. Stay safe and dry! Ainslie

It would be helpful if you would include a map or description of potential flooding areas. "Threatened area" is very vague. Does the "threatened area" include the business district? Where are the flood waters expected to reach? Also, "projected crest" doesn't indicate flood stage. How far over flood stage is the projected cresting? Thank you .
