Members of an Iowa college summer baseball team escaped injury but lost all of their gear and some personal items after their bus caught fire in northwest Missouri.
The Clarinda A's were on their way back to Iowa early yesterday after a weekend road trip in Kansas when a tire blew and started a fire on Interstate 29 near Faucett. A fire extinguisher failed to put out the fire, which quickly spread and destroyed the bus.
All 25 players were able to escape without injury. But the fire destroyed the team's equipment and uniforms, as well as about $2,500 worth of personal items.
The players waited for a bus at a local truck stop and arrived in Clarinda around 5 a.m. A game against the Chillicothe Mudcats last night was postponed.
The A's play in the seven-team MINK (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska,
Kansas) League, designed to give college players a place to play in
the offseason and still maintain their NCAA eligibility.
