Iowa City Man Tells Police He Used Drugs for Compost
IOWA CITY - An interesting excuse from an Iowa City man busted with pot.
Police caught Matthew Furnish, 30, early Saturday morning with what officers described as several bags of marijuana -- some gallon sized and some larger. Furnish told police he knew about the drugs but claimed he used it for compost in his garden. Officers arrested him and charged him with possession with intent to distribute. Furnish could now face up to five years in prison and a fine of $7,500. |

For Logical: I bet if you asked the prison population that drug they first used, they'd all say alcohol. Yes, alcohol and tobacco lead to pot. Drug warriors would have you believe that marijuana is the gateway drug, but the legal drugs open the gateway first.

I believe compost comes in bags bigger than 'gallon-sized'. Nice try though Matthew; not!

For everyone saying "Legalize it"... Ask the prison population what drug was first used. Not one person has jumped into using Meth, coke, etc, without first using pot. Yes, pot is not as addictive as tobacco, alcohol & others but it opens that door. The point of the article is that POT IS ILLEGAL. For those complaining that the cops should be arresting "real criminals" remember that. Pot is illegal, therefore this guy is a real criminal.

All of you who think pot is a good idea, I would disagree. You must not remember the accident that happened a few years ago on 1st ave where a girl was pretty much dismembered by a man who was driving while on pot b/c he was going 60 some mph. Have respect for people who have been hurt by this. Obviously people are more stupid while smoking the mary jane. I say cops are doing their job by trying to protect people like the girl that died.

RE: 1:23 PM whatever wrote ...I'm sure everyone that believes him and thinks he should be given a break smokes pot themselves Well, I've never smoked in my life and I think he should be given a break - that is if all he had was pot...It certainly would be a lot easier to regulate it if it were being sold by convienence stores rather than some sob outside a school or on a dark corner.

Legalize nature. It actually has medicinal purposes.unfortunately u can't say that about alcohol or tobacco.also don't know of too many potheads committing violent crimes. Can't say the same thing concerning alcohol. Its ok though keep punishing the peaceful, loving potheads out there

To anonymous at 9:12am. Marijuana is not technically legal in any state. Some states have made the laws OKing it but federal law supersedes any state legalization law passed. Basically, the local cops may leave you alone, but the feds will bust you.

According to the Iowa City paper, he was also in possession of cocaine, & had intent to sell. So, for those of you who think this is all harmless and the cops should go catch the real criminals, I say, they caught one.

if pot were legal..... the cops could tend to the real issues in our area, and leave the people who smoke weed alone.. You people are missing the point

I'm sure glad they got this guy off the streets, now I can walk downtown in Iowa City safely, oh yeah, except for the sexual assaults, beatings, and shootings..

to the potheads that want it leagal. there is way more money in imprisonment than taxing it. prisons are big business and this state relies on that money. plus the repete ofenders? never ending. besides, there is a smoking ban comin, where ya gonna get high?

Why would you use something whose value has been artifically inflated by the black market and is now worth worth more than gold as compost?

I'm sure whatever who thinks this guy did so wrong and states "I'm sure whoever feels sorry for him smokes pot themselves." Obviously you've never smoked pot or you'd know how harmless it is. I believe most drugs such as METH are harmful and should be outlawed, but Mary Jane is MUCH better for you than alcohol and tobacco and it's not PHYSICALLY addictive. You can quit pot and not have withdrawals you can't do that with tobacco and/or alcohol. You might want it mentally, but NO Detox!

So now at Menards, and Home Depo, are they going to make bongs and rolling papers available next to the "Compost", and just think when you are in the garden "Smoking Compost" and you contract the "Munchies" all you have to do is reach out and grab some "Vegies".. And of course, don't forget to bring something to drink for the "Cotton Mouth"..We can get Panama Compost,Acapulco Gold Compost, and Elephant Weed Compost, the possibilities are endless.. HE MIGHT be on too something.LMAO...Funny..

Yes...wouldn't it be great if law enforcement would use their time and tools to catch real criminals. There should be no such thing as a victimless crime in the 'free society' we supposedly have. I am 50 ...I would still rather have my kids..and grandkids...smoke some 'weed' rather than drink and smoke tobacco anyday.

What next...Will they obtain search warrants for your back yard gardens to check out our "Compost". This will give them one more thing to harrass individuals for instead of doing their jobs, the cops, they are all about themselves in Iowa City, Rude "Rookies"!! Now we will be forced to get a "Drug Stamp" for COMPOST...Give me a break...Would be funny to eat fruits and vegetables and get out suplimental diet requirements and get relaxed from eating at the same time..Here Ya go Nasa, work on this

We could save billions of tax payers money by making marijuana legal. The goverment would make twice that if they taxed it like the do cigarettes! Come on. Think of all the money saved by legalizing marijuana rather then how much tax payers money we spend to not only get it off the streets. We would also save millions by the ones that are in prison and those that will be there for possesion of marijuana. After all I never heard of a violent stoner but have seen many alcohol related fights!

Farmers Markets will be full of people to get this "Organic" grown vegetables. And if this works, just think of the possibilities, in apple orchids, an apple a day keeps the doctor away...or you just don't care..I'm sure he will "Get Off" with a slap on the wrist for being creative, or something "Stupid".

If marijuana was legal, there would be no problem. The compost pile would surely enjoy the two bags, and so would anyone who partakes in the garden, and perhaps it was his medicine. Now he has none, besides all the monetary loses he will be forced to endure, what if that was his medicine for the next few months.Sorry Matt,I feel the loss.Good luck..
