NORTH LIBERTY - City workers along with the DNR are looking for a bear in North Liberty. Since Monday night 11 people have called the city saying they've seen a small black bear in the woods.

Most of the sightings have been at sunset near the train tracks. Officials haven't found any proof of a bear yet, but are still telling people to be careful. The elementary school kept kids in for recess on Thursday and plan to have lookouts Friday morning.

North Liberty Police Chief James Warkentin sent out the following news release: The North Liberty Police Dept. has received several calls of a possible bear sighting in North Liberty. The calls have occurred mostly in the area of the railroad tracks and bike trail along Muddy Creek south of Zeller Street. The North Liberty Police Dept. has investigated these sightings and has been unable to confirm or deny the reports. The city has been in contact with the DNR in reference to these sightings.

If you think you see a bear, do not approach it; contact Johnson County dispatch immediately at (319) 356-6020.
