Family Dog Survives Wild Ride

RURAL DUNKERTON - One farm family north of Dunkerton swears Sunday's storm swept up their pet beagle. And if that's what happened, Skipper survived a ride that might have lasted almost a mile.

The Delagardelle family pet, Skipper, was locked inside the family's attached garage on Sunday. She was probably in her dog house. What happened when the tornado came through? Only Skipper knows for sure.

"We can't ask the dog, if she could tell us, we'd have one heck of a story," said Julie Delagardelle, Skipper's owner.

Julie Delagardelle says Skipper the beagle is afraid of storms, so the family typically locks her inside the garage when they leave home. That's what they did Sunday. Then they got a frantic call from neighbors about a tornado and damage to their home. The arrived to find the attached garage gone and Skipper missing.

"The dog was gone, the dog house was gone, I kind of lost it for a while," said Delagardelle.

Julie and her family started a search for their pet. Almost a mile away, neighbor Lynn Pipho and her family crawled out of the basement after the tornado destroyed their home. Within the rubble, they saw something moving. It was a dog, and she was alive.

The Pipho's uncovered skipper, recognized their neighbor's dog and eventually brought her back home. It's possible the storm blew away the garage and the dog ran away. But the neighbors say they found her buried under rubble and somewhat dazed. And they swear Skipper was picked up by the wind and carried almost a mile along with debris.

"There's no way he walked down there and ended up in this rubble," said Lynn Pipho, neighbor.

The family says Skipper appears in good shape, but was certainly disoriented at first.

"Let him down, runs like he's going to get in the garage stops, looks around like, where's my garage at," said Bill Delagardelle, Skipper's owner.

Believe it or not, here's another bit of evidence. The home where the beagle wound up is directly in line with the path the tornado took as it went through the area. Of course, only one dog knows for sure, and Skipper's not saying.

It must be nice to live life so perfectly that you can criticize a feel good story like this. i can only hope to be HALF as perfect as you seem to think you are. Idiot.

"Bad Story" you make me sick!!! I hope you someday experience something like this...then you will know what it feels like to have someone criticize how you handle your pet. You are pathetic!

It makes me sick to think that there are people who are blaming the owners of Skipper for what happened!

I am glad the dog is OK. Thank God for that. Also thank God that more people didn't lose there lives on this day. This storm was awful. People need to stop complaining and help those that were less fortunate. They should also count there blessings!

I've had weiner dogs most of my adult live and they are great companions, as are most dogs. sounds like some of these comments are from people that have never experienced the companship of a dog. While dogs can't talk most dog owners will tell you they are quite good at commucating with us humans in their own ways. All my dogs have had spots in or around the house that they felt secure in, this little fellow appears to have had a garage that was his safe haven, and it appears he took a wild ride

Well, they CHANGED the story after my comments, it used to say "only one person knows for sure" now it says "only one DOG knows for sure" so before you jump all over me, pull your heads out. Apparently, someone at KCRG agreed with my points and corrected the post. After all the stories I've correct on KCRG I should really start charging them!

"Bad Story" you are an idiot. The story never refers to the dog as a person. ...only one dog knows for sure, and Skipper's not saying. Of course Skipper isn't saying, he's a dog. That's why the last line is a cute way to end the story. Stop and think before you comment something so stupid.

Some people are just naturally negative and will find something negative with everything. They just are not typically happy people.

I'm not criticizing the 'feel good story' which, if you ask me, deserves plenty of criticism. I'm saying that they shouldn't say a dog is a person.

Is that the point Bad Story? Ever think this was a feel good story in time of tradgedy and that mistakes KCRG makes is irrelevent.

Oh, for cryin' out loud! Bad Story, if you are so great at journalism, why aren't you writing these stories instead of complaining about them? You have the choice to get your news somewhere else if you are so unhappy with this station.

"The dog doesn't like storms, so we put him in the garage." WHAT! Have you ever thought of a dog crate in a bathroom, or basement with a radio playing. Why do Iowan's have this mentality that dogs belong outside or in a garage. For Gods sake, dogs are companion animals and belong inside with family.Poor Skipper was probably so afraid and alone during this storm. At least he made it though without any injuries, or do we even know that for sure since it sounds like he was not taken to the vet....

Animals are amazing at hiding... My uncle got hit by the April tornado 2 yrs ago and they lost the roof of their garage in Anamosa Ia, their kitten, Smokey was up in the roof of the garage in a couch and he was taken down the street about 300 yards some where in there. I am happy for the family who got their pet back that can always be comforting... Best of luck to you all in the storm.

The line "only one person knows for sure, and Skipper's not saying". No, no PEOPLE know for sure. Only one DOG knows for sure, and he's not saying. I know it sounds insignificant, but its an important detail. If KCRG can't even get things right such as if a dog is a PERSON or an ANIMAL, how can we trust their other news stories?
