Make Donations for Tornado Victims

By Becky Ogann

WATERLOO - A huge number of people have been looking for ways to help the storm victims. Below is a list of ways you can help.

Donate Money:
People can make out checks to the American Red Cross Hawkeye Chapter (319.234.6832) or the Salvation Army (1.800.SAL.ARMY). And those can be dropped off at Fidelity Bank and Trust, Community Bank of Oelwein, Regions Bank or Veridian Credit Union in Oelwein, Lincoln Savings Bank in Allison, First State Bank in Conrad, Iowa State Bank in Parkersburg, Security State Bank in Shell Rock. Please mark "tornado relief" on your check.

You can also donate money directly to the Aplington-Parkersburg School Tornado Fund. The money goes to support students, teacher, and staff. Just send a check to:
Aplington-Parkersburg School Tornado Fund
P.O. Box 607 Aplington, IA 50604

The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa has established the Tornadoes of 2008 Assistance Fund to assist with the long-term needs of tornado victims and their families. Full info.

Donate Items:
American Legions are accepting donations. American Legion Posts
According to volunteers working in the disaster areas of Parkersburg, these are the items needed the MOST at this time:
- Brand New Socks and Underwear
- Cleaning Supplies
- Large Black Trash Bags
- Mattresses (All Sizes)
- Blankets and Comforters (Queen Size)
- Dish Soap
- Triple and Double-A Batteries
- Plastic Baggies (like sandwich bags)
- Non-perishable food items (like canned items)

Goodwill is accepting donations.Click for SE Iowa Locations | Click for NE Iowa Locations
Goodwill is collecting clothes, household items, shovels, rakes, kitchenware, cleaning supplies, new paper towels, toilet paper, personal items, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, razors, shampoo etc.

Toys and books are being collected at the Sleep Inn and Suites in North Liberty, the Main Stay Suites in Cedar Rapids and the Sleep Inn and Suites in Mount Vernon. They're looking for everything from rattles and teething toys for babies to books and board games for older children.

Mainstay Suites in Cedar Rapids is taking kids toys and pet supplies. They will be taking up the goods on Saturday, June 7th. 5145 Rockwell Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402, (319) 363-7829.

Donate Time:
Iowans interested in volunteering with the clean up at Parkersburg and New Hartford are asked to call the Iowa Concern Hotline at 1-800-447-1985. At the current time there are enough volunteers for the weekend. When additional help is needed, volunteers will be contacted.

Iowans who want to help should call the hotline before going up to Parkersburg. Volunteers that arrive without being requested can become another challenge for responders who are already taxed with other tasks.

Volunteers need to wear gloves, pants and protective shoes. Boots are preferred because of all the nails. Volunteers also need to be over the age of 14 because of the type of work required.

On the Scene:
An emergency distribution site has been established at Bethel Lutheran Church, 701 3rd Avenue, in Parkersburg. The church can be reached at 319-346-2028. Two temporary collection centers have been set up in Grundy Center at the Grundy National Bank at 603 7th St. and 529 G Avenue.

The Parkersburg Middle School Shelter is collecting toiletries, mattresses and of course clothes. If you're planning to donate clothes, they need more of the larger sizes that are in new or like new condition.

Events:
KCRG-TV9 is putting on a benefit concert with Cumulus Broadcasting and local bands Lockren and Wildcard. It will be Sunday, June 1st, at the Bremer County Fairgrounds in Waverly. Cost is $5 a person or $15 per family. And 100% of the money will go to relief efforts. Full info.

UNI will host a benefit concert featuring The Blue Band, Checker and the Bluetones, Jason Rich and the Salsa Band on Tuesday, June 3rd beginning at 7 p.m. at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 per person. Free tickets will be given to anyone who has been impacted by the tornado. Full info.

Specific Needs:
You can call the Iowa Concern Hotline at 1-800-447-1985. The organization matches up donors with specific needs.

We live in Waterloo and would be willing to temporarily care for pets of people who are in housing and can't have them right now...we have our own pets, so they would have to be able to get along with other animals. 319-830-5536.

Its wonderful that everyone is worried about the individuals in Parkersburg. However, due to the efforts in that town other towns have been forgotten. Please donate items to New Hartford, Dunkerton, and Hazelton as well as any other places that were impacted. These people were impacted just as greatly as Parkersburg. Thanks to all those who are helping those affected by the storms!!!

I called Goodwill in Dubuque yesterday and was told that they DO take donations for the tornado victims in Parkersburg. We ask, however, that you label it as such.

All Goodwill locations in the Goodwill of the Heartlands have gaylords set up for donations. This includes I.C, Coralville, C.R., Marion, Washinton, Muscatine, Clinton and the Quad Cities. Just make sure when you drop it off that you let the clerk know that it is for the tornado victims.

I donated at the Coralville Goodwill last night. They were a little confused at first, but took my goods (shampoo etc) and said they'd send them up.

I live in Victor and contacted the Grinnell Goodwill Industries and they are under the Des Moines office and are not involved with this project. It would have made it so much easier for me and closer (with the gas prices) to drop off my donated items for the tornado victims at Grinnell. I have clothing and other goods to donate.

How long will Goodwill be collecting these items for them?

In reference to my comment, I mean a single layer of trash bags full of cloths, not just a single layer of cloths.

I will be willing to help organize something from Cedar Rapids. Since goodwill will not accept certain items such as changing tables, car seats, strollers etc. Heck, I would rent a u-haul if I knew there would be enough to put in it.
