Deadly Tornado Traveled 43 Miles

KCRG - A large tornado responsible for the deaths of 6 people in Butler County traveled more than 43 miles before dissipating. A preliminary survey by the National Weather Service in Des Moines says winds were 165mph or greater in the tornado. Officials stress that is not a final estimate and that more precise figures would be released late Tuesday Afternoon.

The tornado touched down at 4:48 PM Sunday 2 miles south of Aplington. It then traveled through Parkersburg, New Hartford and northern Black Hawk County before dissipating.

The width of the tornado was estimated at around two-thirds of a mile wide when it struck Parkersburg. As it passed New Hartford, the width fell to a quarter mile. But when it reached the Dunkerton area, it had grown to 1.2 miles wide before dissipating near the Black Hawk - Buchanan County line.

The National Weather Service says its investigation is still ongoing and will continue through Tuesday. Stay with KCRG-TV 9 and kcrg.com as new information on the deadly tornado is released.
