WATERLOO - The American Red Cross Hawkeye Chapter is assisting residents of Parkersburg, Dunkerton, Hazleton and New Hartford due to Sunday evening’s tornados.
The American Red Cross has set up shelters in the following areas:
Aplington Middle School
Dunkerton Community School
Hazleton First Presbyterian Church
100 3rd St. Hazleton, IA
The Red Cross is also asking for time, money, and blood donations. For more information and to learn how you can donate, contact the Hawkeye Chapter at 319-234-6831 or visit
www.hawkeyechapter.org.
The American Red Cross is also urging people in disaster areas to register as "safe and well" on their web site. That means family members from outside the affected areas can find out if you're okay and where you're staying.
Register as "Safe and Well" with American Red Cross by going to
www.RedCross.org.
Two disaster workers from the American Red Cross of the Tri-States have been deployed to Parkersburg, Iowa to respond to Sunday’s destructive tornado and provide support to the ongoing relief effort. The relief workers will be working in disaster mental health for the Red Cross.
The two deployed Red Cross workers from the Tri-State chapter are Rose Meisch of Dyersville and William Schemp of Decorah.

How are people that have just went through a tornado and now have nothing able to get online and go to a website to register as safe? Or even those that didn't loose everything, but have no power, telephone, etc... how are they going to be able to go to the site as well? My prayers are with them all.

I am in Tennessee - my grandparents lived in Parkersburg for years (extended family still in Aplington) so this is such sad news to me. We are so sorry for the loss to P'burg - our thoughts are with you.

Does anyone know if the tornado actually hit New Hartford? I have a friend there and I can't reach her on her phone or cell. Just wondering if lines are down in area or if they took a direct hit like Parkersburg? I'll keep checking back. TY for any info. My prayers go out to all that have been touched by these devastating storms.

Thank you for your comments about New Hartford - it was a mistake on the Red Cross press release and has now been fixed on this web story. Thank you.

You (and other media outlets) keep saying "New Hampton". It is not New Hampton. It is New Hartford. No tornado came anywhere near New Hampton. I know. I live there.

My son's future mother in law lives in Parkersburg and survived the storm in her basement. When she came upstairs there was nothing there. We are fortunate to still have her with us!

I think you might mean, New Hartford rather than New Hampton? Fantastic weather reporting and videos today! Thanks!
