Police Blame Blowing Smoke for Five Vehicle Crash

By Shannon Booth, Producer

By Shannon Booth

HUDSON - The Hudson Police Department is investigating an afternoon crash involving five vehicles.

Investigators say a farmer was burning flood debris in the 7000 block of Hudson Road. And that poor visibility sent an East Centerl Iowa Cooperative grain truck across the center line. That truck hit a van, owned by Alvin Beenken of Cedar Falls. Then an Iowa DOT truck hit the grain truck. A rental truck stopped and then was rear-ended by a Blazer owned by Richard Crotty of Cedar Falls.

Police say paramedics took Beenken to the hospital. There's no word on his condition.

The investigation continues and so far no charges have been filed.

Slow down. It's not like the smoke was hidden and suddenly darted into the road as they went by. You can see smoke from a distance. Burning flood debris (any kind of natural disaster debris) is legal. Whether burned or dumped into a landfill, it would still pollute somewhere.

There was similar case around here. A truck was hauling a load much too heavy and therefore smoke was pouring out of the truck and visibility was 0. Because of that a High School student rear ended another vehicle, etc. But here, the student was ticketed anyway!

so it was a intended accident then? when will people stop blaming everyone else. sometime you must just except it was an accident. i am sure the person who had the fire did not have the intent to hurt or inconveince anyone else. God bless the working man everyone else just blame the honest man for their inconvience!

What are the burn laws there? I am so glad CR doesn't allow burning - not only for reasons like what is featured in this story , but also because when people burn their leaves and yard clippings, they tend to be burning all the Chemlawn type chemcials used on those lawns as well. Hello health risks!

The Farmer should be the one to, blame. He had the fire going. Hope everyone is OK.
