All of you who think this part of CR is so ghetto and so bad- have you ever lived in a real urban area, like Chicago, NY or even Minneapolis? It makes me laugh when these minor incidents are treated like the Bloods and the Crips. Thank our good fortune to live in such a comparably nice safe city!!!!

of hearing people complain about crpd. if you do not feel that they are doing their jobs, you need to become an officer. if you are not willing to help out, then you have no right to complain.

U ppl sure have enough guts to talk. Half dont live there but the ones that do dont get help from police anyway. To them a criminal is somebody walking down the street thugged out pants saggin doin nothin, and it still takes 6 or 7 officers to ask his name.Hows that for stereotyping????The police could do better but will they hell noooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, May 19 at 1:07 PM Speed Trap? wrote ...

Have any of you thought that it probably wasn't a speed trap. Most likely the police were there to catch drunk drivers at 2am. The police do what they can, and they have to priortize thier duties... Sitting at a gas station waiting for something to happen VS on the highway with a higher probability of catching drunk drivers mostly likely to cause an accident or even kill/injure an innocent bystander.

Maybe we should stop giving out welfare handouts to those who don't work, and start paying for more officers. Make the pantless thugs with picks in their hair do some work for the city... maybe then they would stop causing trouble.

ok, so no, i have not " walked in a cops shoes." however, i HAVE walked in the shoes of a law abiding citizen living near drug dealers, who repeatedly calls the crpd when transactions are taking place, or fights break out, only to be told, " we'll send a car by," to then watch for this phantom patrol car, that never shows. it's it tough being a cop? certainly, but if those wearing the uniform cannot, or will not respond to citizens' concerns, perhaps a wrong career choice was made.

Monday, May 19 at 9:43 AM unknown wrote ...

I have friends that work there and when a fight breaks out they do call on crpd and usually there is a security guard up there anyway... so unless you know the actual facts, you shouldn't be commenting on this story... providing it started at a bar and ended up at the road ranger.

where was the "speed trap" at? Several people have mentioned this "speed trap" that prevented the cops from preventing a fight between 2 people at a random location in CR.

I have a feeling, after reading most of the ignorant comments on this story, that the people generating these comments are the same people who hang out at the 15th st. Road Ranger. The truth of the matter is, more people die in Linn county from auto accidents than gang violence so speed traps are necessary. That gas station should be shut down, end of story. It was the same way 20 years ago, it will never change. Changing Iowa welfare laws would end at least 50% of the problem.

The police were busy on a lonely highway road running a speed trap to collect money instead of protect and serve. Just goes to show what they really care about; money. police are tax collectors with guns and batons, and tazers, they enforce the laws they break themselves and expect us to approve.

A bad area, maybe. Look at the police calls is all for this area. Is it the police fault. no. Is it a race issue? no. Is it a fact? YES.

Sunday, May 18 at 7:34 PM Sitting in judgment? wrote ...

I am not a cop, nor have I ever been. I do have many cop friends, and if all you that sit in judgment of these folks would care to change your job and try what they do under the amount of stress, regulations, and anxiety that these cops endure, then shut your mouth and change jobs. Try walking a mile in their shoes before you condemn them. The late weekend shift is a nasty, violent shift to be on. It requires tenacity and character strength you cannot fathom. Again, walk the walk or keep quiet.

the thugs are the ones the CRPD should be going after for money...i'm sure they carry around more than the standard speeding ticket amount in their pockets whether its in their drugs or guns

I've seen a fight there before a few years ago when it used to be Quiktrip and the two guys who were fighting slammed up against the passenger side of my car as I was trying to back out of my parking space. Usually there are officers hanging around there but I haven't seen any lately. But then again, I don't go around that place too often. Definitely not the best area to hang around at 2am.

Encounters like this can be dangerous and costly for the cops. Better stick to handing out speeding tickets to commuters who work for a living. Unlike the real thugs, drivers are a great revenue source and most of them are responsible enough to NOT give the cop any grief. Follow the money!

Sunday, May 18 at 1:16 PM Everyone has an opinion wrote ...

Many of you need to grow up and stop blaming police. You complain cops aren't on the highways yet you want them to ignore your illegal driving. You complain that cops aren't in your neighborhood but you want them to ignore you and your illegal acts. You want the police to stop everyone else but leave YOU alone? If you personally know of misconduct then lodge your complaint. They get proper attention. Those of you who try to attach a label to all officers from isolated incidents need to get real.

Hey Public Servant, if you do not want to serve and do your job right quit find something more rewarding. "Thank you" for quiting, there are a few good peace officers that have not burned out. I could not be a police officer because I would not abuse the law, or my power. when the gestapo leader tells you "go write more speeding tickets", "we need to increase revenue" quit. What is "goal, for the nigh? what is quota for the night? I know they are not mandatory, they make your job more difficult.

I'd like to put some of these armchair advisors in a patrol car some night and see how they would react when a call came in, it's a tough job with very seldom any "Thanks"

Sunday, May 18 at 9:33 AM Gees wrote ...

CR is going straight down the tubes. Can't blame it on the police, there are only so many of them, oh wait, maybe the city should quit wasting money and find a way to hire more cops. Or instead of going outside the state yet again for a PD chief, they could promote someone from within who already knows the system, the officers, and the city. Gee, or since the city took away the chopper, they could have put the money back in to the PD and hired new people and put more cars out on the street.

Sunday, May 18 at 3:55 AM Anonymous wrote ...

To whomever thinks he runs the gestapo... i mean police department... Why not target the areas dense with crime, instead of speed traps on deserted county highways. Now that I think about it, the criminals don't pay... but commuters do. I understand, times are tough, so steal from the ones who work. Tax collectors with guns and batons.

At 1:30am last night all officers were called to find a man that left a bar and was walking around with a gun. But thats ok... its not like he was dangerous or anything, just drunk and loaded.

You people expect the police to be everywhere at once. It is impossible for this to happen, look at the population and sq. miles of cedar rapids compared to the amount of officers. They cannot be everywhere at once.

Saturday, May 17 at 7:32 PM what a joke wrote ...

That is wierd, there are usually 2 or 3 officers there eating or talking. Where were they? Maybe they were at neighborhood parks doin the wild thing instead of doing their jobs.
