BUCHANAN COUNTY - When you randomly pull twenty cars off the road at a time, you're bound to come across some interesting stories.
"It's kinda crazy, I thought I was in trouble," said one driver.
Eighty people who can arrest you, from 12 different agencies, spent 4 hours on Interstate 380. They were looking for anything and everything.
In the first two hours of the annual operation, they checked through more than 500 cars, talked to hundreds of people on the road and checked hundreds of headlights. Yes headlights.
"It's common stuff, but the average everyday person takes it for granted," said SGT Terry Marker with the Iowa State Patrol.
One person was nabbed for OWI, another family was questioned after a drug sniffing dog combed their car. Investigators say one van was packed with seven illegal immigrants. The checkpoint also found five people on outstanding warrants and made two drug arrests.
Some drivers didn't like the few minute delay. Others didn't care.
"If it keeps some knuckle heads off the road that's a good thing for me. Makes my life safer, others lives safer," said a driver.
This only happens once a year. But, the hope is the reminders last a lifetime.

Then you instruct me just how to operate my possession(vehicle I bought), On the road we the people pay for with those taxes... with a license I must purchase.. wow that's a lot of money. then add how many thousand tickets a year?

each night randomly search 20 homes during the over night hours when people are home and can be detained during the search process. Tickets can then be presented at that time, payment would of course be due at time if issuance and if you don't have the money in your wallet law enforcement would then be allowed to take personal items equal to the fine.

Folks do drugs in homes, Illegals live in homes, meth labs are located in homes, so owning and living in a home is probable cause, so doesn't it make sense to randomly search homes, do it during the day while everyone is at work and just leave a note on the door that your home has passed inspection along with the bill for doing so. This is just the start.

It seems we've moved away from a Democratic Society to a Totalitarian Nation. Adolf Hilter would be proud. The police have overstepped there boundries on many occasions while quoting the law as justification. Most law enforcement is about revenue collection rather than protection of the public. A perfect example is the rising fines that are associated with the citations. We need to tie the hands of the police and limit their power. While maintaining a safe environment for both.

They need to do these on random busy roads every week. Can you imagine the progress our state could make? It is ridiculous the things that people get away with and never think they will get caught. Whatever it takes. Is it a little unfair that it has to disrupt your day? Absolutely! But I guarantee if you were the one who got hit by that drunk driver they picked up or by the people without insurance than you may see it a different way. I think it is a great way to weed people out.

You people have no idea what you are talking about. There is ample US Supreme Court case law that says that safety checkpoints are acceptable as long as vehicles are stopped in a random and systematic manner (all vehicles, ten at a time, etc). Iowa Code chapter 321K even provides more restriction on checkpoints than the supreme court does.

and if you ask"If you dont have anything to hide, what does it matter?", the principle here is what matters. If you start letting the govt do anything they want now, start letting them bend the rules and infringe upon your rights every once in a while, then they will keep doing it because they know they can get away with it. This country is still ruled by the people, but the majority of people are too lazy so they do nothing about it, and that is why the govt has as much control as it does today

Requiring drivers to buy insurance one thing. Requiring citizens to PROVE their compliance with this law is quite another. The Constitution even says people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. It's up to the gov't to prove guilt; not up to people to prove innocence. If you can be fined for failing to prove you complied with a minor insurance law, then you can be thrown in prison until you prove you've never committed murder.

In each case the officer's could tow your vehicle and hold it until you get/provide proof of insurance. If I have to have insurance, you sure the hell better have it.

You don't have insurance? how is that legal?...this is why they are making the stops, to catch LAW BREAKERS! 40 years ago it was common to be stopped anywhere at anytime for safety inspections..now that mostly applies to truckers. BTW, this is the USA a free country...but you are not free to break the laws. Take it or leave it.

ok, no insurance? It's called a law, there's a reason they make them, to keep others safe. How many crack heads make comments arguing their stupidity on this website? I demand a headcount.

4th Amendment says"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." The state views;"UNREASONABLE" as their loophole.

Geez they only spent 4 hours and they found quite a few drivers that shouldn't be driving. Though I can understand why the few minute delay would be annoying, I'd rather have that delay than be hit by one of those people.

This is so illegal, if you ever get put in this situation you don't have to consent to anytype of search what so ever. This is such a flagrant violation of peoples rights.

11:10 PM WTF!!! You can't afford insurance?!?!?! You're pissed cause they're pulling people over and you're fine with driving with no insurance? So when you get in an accident and can't pay the other person back you see no problem with that, but you see it wrong that cops are pulling cars over? You my friend need to get things straightened out in your head cause something isn't right! I say good for the cops, I think this is great!!!

If you cannot afford insurance you ought not to be driving. What happens if you injury someone? Their coverage from uninsured drivers may be inadequate. Then you will face a personal injury lawsuit and be wiped out. You think you are poor now? Just wait and see. Or would you just drive off? Act in that manner. Insurance rates are not that high. We cover two newer cars, two drivers, $40 a month. Is it previous accidents that raised your rates too high? If so I hope you DO get caught.

I've often wondered that about "proof of insurance" - how does requiring people to prove themselves innocent of not having insurance comport with our Constitutional Rights of "not compelling self-incrimination" and "innocent until proven guilty"? Apparently, citizens must obey thousands of laws but government bureaucrats can flagrantly disregard the Constitution.

it's not right! Nazi's pushing power. Checking papers without probabal cause is a crime!! we have no freedom in this country! the constitution was trampled on today.

Ah, nothing like being stopped by a dozen unelected gov't agencies at a time, all looking for a way to deprive us of our liberties & property. Just like Nazi Germany or Communist countries, where they make people stop and show their papers to prove their innocence of being in public without gov't permission. I guess "probable cause" and "due process" were just a joke in the Constitution. How long until they cut the charade and just force us all into concentration camps?
