Dubuque - A one two punch could be devastating for the Dubuque Colts Drum and Bugle Corps.
As it gears up for summer competition, high fuel prices and a state-wide smoking ban are hurting the group's bottom line.
The group's leaders are going to extremes to keep the Colts alive.
It has been a summer-time tradition for the past 45 years. Day after day, intense training and traveling.
Colts Director Greg Orwoll said, "we use music and excellence to teach each other about success in life,"
Young adults from all over the country gather in Dubuque in late May to begin their nation-wide bus tour.
Orwoll says in the process of traveling they cover San Antonio, Orlando, Atlanta, Allentown, and all the points in between.
All those miles add up. The organization expects to pay almost $100,000 in fuel this summer. Thousands more than expected.
The Colts host community bingo games three nights per week. That raises $90,000 for the Corps each year.
But the smoking ban scheduled to begin July first could send smokers to other gambling spots.
Orwoll thinks the ban is going to draw players away from the Colts hall. He believes they are going to go to
the casinos where they can "gamble and smoke."
Orwoll is calling this seasons budget woos "the perfect storm". He's not sure how the Colts will survive.
Colts Volunteer Rod Bakke pulled some strings to get these autographed pictures of recently retired NFL player Brett Favre.
The colts are selling chances to win the coveted piece of memorabilia.
"Every cent that we raise will help us pay for those 11,600 miles that we will be touring this summer," said Bakke.
Bakke says to a Packer fan, these pictures are priceless.
The same word Orwoll uses to describe the Colts' experience.
That's why he's doing what he can to breathe financial life back into a program, that has changed the lives of so many.
Raffle tickets for the autographed Brett Favre photos are on sale at all American Trust Bank locations in Dubuque.
Tickets cost 20 dollars each, or six for 100 dollars.
The Colts will draw a winner on June 12th.
