Who Is Reserving So Many Parking Spots?

CEDAR RAPIDS - If you've been in downtown Cedar Rapids this week, you might have noticed a few less parking spots.

The city says there's dozens of parking meters with a "Reserved Parking" hood on them.

The parking department says they are auditing several of the meters. That means they cover one of the pair, and make sure each works properly by itself.

However, that leaves one parking spot empty.

After TV9 asked, Doug Forbes with the Parking Department said they might considering changing the hoods, so drivers can still use the open space.

Before the city puts is boondoggle master plan in place to "revive" the riverfront, let's make sure all the meters are working correctly so we can nail anyone that dares to visit the downtown area. So many fines, so little time!

Hey man, I agree with you. CR needs some help. I live near it and work in it, and its just a joke how they have run it in to the ground. They vote for a new style of govt. who has done nothing but waste money and end valuable programs ie. the police chopper. Did they put more cops on the street? Did they buy new patrol cars? NOPE!! the money went back in to the city kauffers and then they voted for a pay raise for themselves because they did such a great job cutting programs and losing more $

Shergus is so correct! They can even reuse the same quarter by removing it from the meter. But since that would have multiple meters fed for what? 30 minutes? they can't abide by a CR citizen benefiting from such a logical measure and parking in there and gaining a smidge of free parking.

This is just another unbrilliant move by our city mismaganers to waste more tax dollars. Why did we get suckered into changing the form of city government. We should get rid of all of them.

You guys in CR complain about a lot. I have to agree, you have lower tickets and without them your city would be worse off. Ours is. The only businesses that move in are bars and CR from what I see in nothing but an alcoholic's haven. I hate visiting and if it weren't for family and business, I wouldn't. Quit complaining about nothing and clean up your town. You could be wasting money on the stupid river front project that as we see it is a HUGE waste of money.

You should learn about city government, but I guess ignorance is bliss. Where do you think the money comes from for the buss department? Not the busses. How about the maintenance on the parking ramps? At least you don't have hundred dollar tickets like in Chicago and most other cities. They just need to hire back the good city managers and get rid of the ones in charge now. We might come back then.

The parking system is the only thing that is financially keeping CR alive. It's the only part of the city in the black. If you would just pay attention to your time you wouldn't get tickets. I used to get them all the time, but it was my own fault. Without the meters, the parking space would be taken up all the time and no one would move. I know, That's what happened in Des Moines. It's impossible to find any parking on some days where the meters were removed.

Is it really necessary to change the hoods? Can't they just be turned inside out during the auditing period?

If it wasn't for the stupid parking ticket traps all over downtown, I'd go there more often. On a good day, the meter revenues and parking fines are enough to cover the paychecks of the meter maids, but what's the point of keeping that scam in place just to keep them employed? Idea: get rid of the meter maids and you won't need the meters! Until then, the city "leaders" will continue to wonder why people don't visit downtown anymore.

why does they have to cover one of the meters to make sure the other one works? Can't they just put a quarter into each side and see if the meter gives displays the time? I'm also wondering why the city is spending time making sure the meters work when there are many other things that need fixing, some of which impact public safty, like holes in the road and broken street lights.
