Muscatine Event Turns to Paddle Boats Due to Flooding

By Becky Ogann

MUSCATINE (AP) - Boats will still take to the Mississippi River this weekend in Muscatine, but don't expect roaring engines or sprays of water.

Because of flooding, paddle boats will replace racing boats as part of the "That Was Then, This Is Now" event on the city's riverfront. The river was expected to crest Thursday at nearly two feet over flood stage.

Rather than watching racing boats, teams can race on two "tricked-out" paddle boats.

Racing boats still will be on display on the riverfront from Friday through Sunday.

If there is MORE water in the river than normal, why take out racing boats and replace them w/ paddle boats? Sounds like a fun event either way, I just don't understand the logic behind the change. Higher fuel prices make more sense as a reason for this.
