Senior Pranks Lands Le Mars Students in Trouble

LE MARS (AP) - Three little pigs that were part of a senior prank have landed two students at Le Mars High School in trouble.

Seniors Michael Donlin and Victor Fischer, both of Le Mars, are accused of using a stolen set of keys to get into the school early Monday, where they locked the pigs inside the building.

A custodian found the pigs Monday morning. No damage was done to the school, but there was a mess.

Superintendent Todd Wendt says the pigs were in the school for five or six hours and there was a "cleanup issue."

Donlin and Fischer are charged with fifth-degree theft and trespassing. They have been banned from Sunday's graduation ceremony.

I realize the fact that the keys were said to be stolen, but do we know that for sure unless we were there? Not to mention that senior pranks have been around for years and so have senior skip days. Obviously the people who are arguing that these kids should get charged as criminals weren't the "cool" kids in school. As far as I'm concerned it was a normal senior prank, these kids weren't looking to harm anyone. It's a small-town custom to play a senior prank, and it could've been MUCH worse!

Don't all of you who think this is just a big joke see it for a larger problem. The mention of stolen keys used to enter the building after hours. I can assure you that if I were to steal your house keys, enter in the middle of the night and put three little piggies in your home...you might have an issue with that. I fully agree with the others that our society has gotten to the point of everything is funny and harmless, unless it is happening to you!

I dont know about anyone else but unless these kids pulled this prank I dont know if I would have even known about LeMars...let alone their graduation. Im suprised at the harsh punishment for such a prank...also surprised that the school didnt call out PETA on the boys or something the way they have reacted. Geeez...lighten up...at least the boys got your school recognized...I say MAKE them go to graduation and sit there for HOURS like all of the rest of the graduating class.

Well, they got what they wanted, 15 minutes of fame, thanks to KCRG! Congrats to the school for giving them a consequence. That was the risk they took when they decided to do the prank.

In situations like this, you have to punish them if you catch them. It still is funny though.

You took God out of the school and now the piggies too.OH and there was no mess to speak of one mop head that the boys paid for.

Parents, help your children to have some harmless fun.

Oh gosh people, its a senior prank. No one got hurt, and the pigs were just fine. This has gone on for generations. My grandfather told me the story of his senior prank. They filled the gym with chickens. When I was in high school someone put a squirrel in the boys bathroom. After graduation these kids have to "grow up" maybe we should cut them a little slack.

I bet if they would have released some "Blue Rabbits" in the school, everyone would have just laughed?

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? These kids are being accused of this. This is an eduacational system that has not followed the law of the land. These kids are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. They have the right to be tried by a jury of their peers. What happens after graduation when they(Mr. Wendt) finds out it wasn't them that did it and they miss their graduation ceremony? I recall that JHS had a dozen "pigs" show up during lunch over a food fight.......

Well, leave it to the fun haters to give the kids a police record over a senior prank. The school needs to lighten up, these kids were having fun. If there needs to be a punishment, make them clean up the mess. Sheesh, some adults forgot what it is like to be young I guess.

Wow, imagine having rules and discipline. I applaud the school and hope they don't bend over for the parents. As a parent, I would be furious at my CHILD, not the school. Actions have consequences and the consequences shouldn't be for the janitors.

if they are not going to walk the stage at the ceremony is that really doing to prove anything? wow. a harmless prank and that happens. I agree with "Senior Mom", maybe if they had different last names the outcome would be different.. wow.

Thursday, May 15 at 2:34 PM Come On wrote ...

This sounds pretty harmless to me, not allowing them to attend graduation seems a little extreme... I agree that this punishes the familys not the students... watch out for next year, students no know that no matter how harmless the prank they still get punished, I'd look for a much worse prank next year... might as well do a "crime" worthy of the punishment.

I was so disappointed in the kids today, my kid is graduating and no skip day, no harmless pranks, nothing. BORING! These "bad" kids in Le Mars must have the wrong last names otherwise they would have been slapped on the wrist and sent on their merry way...

Perhaps not letting them going to graduation it a little harsh, but i guess if things like this slide by, then more people may pull pranks in the years to come. I think they should have said their sorry to the custodians and then cleaned up the mess themselves instead of them not going to graduation.

To those of you who think two measly little pigs was a horrible prank...keep in mind the senior prank at Central City High of 2004 when three students broke in and spread liquid manure all over the hallways of the three high school floors. And also a car somehow made it onto the roof of the school...nobody knows how that was done. Compared to that this prank is nothing!! Nobody ever got in trouble let alone charged for the pranks at CC. Let the kids have their fun!!! I've seen much worse.

I hope the pigs were numbered "1", "2" & "4". I have to say that these students pulled a classic prank, it seems sad to me that they will not be allowed to attend the ceremony as this only punishes the family of the students (what student really wants to sit on stage for several hours). I'm not saying the school is in the wrong, something has to be done, otherwise more students will pull pranks. Still, this is a classic, and very Iowan, prank.

Thursday, May 15 at 9:52 AM Too harsh wrote ...

That is so dumb for them to be banned. They should have just made the kids clean up the mess. It's not like they are ooooh terrorists. Maybe if they had been dealing drugs they would have been able to graduate with their class. I thought this was hilarious... and I am 31.

Thursday, May 15 at 9:46 AM digital wrote ...

I am surprised that the Superintendent did anything. I don't know this gentleman, but, discipline today seems out of vogue. Good for Mr. Wendt. Now, if the parents just let him follow through with the ban on Sunday.

Thursday, May 15 at 8:44 AM get a grip dude!!! wrote ...

does anyone not have a sense of humor anymore! they outta feel lucky that they didnt do something way worse. why would u be so cruel and make them not be able to go to there graduation? you arent punishing the kids your punishing the parents. not very many kids go all the way thru high school anymore so the principle outta re-think his choice. everyone should be allowed to graduate and not be told weather u can go or not! i think its a bad choice on the principles part!
