Dubuque - Fear of another raid is spreading to nearby communities. Immigration workers in Dubuque say dozens of illegal immigrants are terrified investigators will show up at their door next
Sister Jeanette McCarthy spends her days and nights making Spanish speaking Catholics feel welcome in Dubuque. She says right now they feel anything but welcome.
McCarthy said, "Many of the Hispanics are very worried in fact three or four families have gone back to Mexico."
McCarthy says the immigrants who have stuck around, even legal immigrants, are scared.
McCarthy said, "They don't want to go outside, they don't want to go to the store."
One woman born in Mexico, now living in Dubuque illegally says she worries how a raid here would affect her children. She asked Tv-9 to protect her identity out of fear she'll be discovered by federal officials.
She believes what happened in Postville was unjust. She doesn't think it should be a crime to live in United States without proper documentation.
McCarthy said, "They are hard workers and they are such nice people, actually they are very religious people, very family oriented."
McCarthy says the current immigration laws are not working. She says something has to change, so she can continue to welcome people speaking any language to her church.
St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque holds a Sunday mass said entirely in Spanish.
She expects attendance for this Sunday's service to decrease dramatically.
