CEDAR RAPIDS - Two eastern Iowa businesses are among six in Iowa that received state help Wednesday.

Monsanto expects to put a new seed corn production facility near Independence. The state awarded Monsanto tax benefits to create 47 jobs.

In Butler County, David and Monte Allan plan to start a new powder coating business. They are getting more than a quarter-million dollars in forgivable loans to help create 81 jobs in Allison.

It should be federal law that nobody gets tax breaks, especially those like Monsanto who have the bucks but just play the system because it's easy pickings. How much did they get? I'll bet it's more than the Allans even though it will be half as many jobs.

How does this shuffling money around "create" anything? The state is giving money to politically-favored companies to "create jobs". The state GETS that money from people working those and other jobs, leaving working people with less money. Other companies are then dissuaded from hiring in Iowa because they are not getting the same corporate welfare handouts, which puts them at a competitive disadvantage with those who are. Fewer employers then creates less demand for workers.
