AMES (AP) - Iowa's new five-year, $2 billion road construction plan focuses on safety and maintenance but lacks major highway construction projects.
The Iowa Transportation Commission's plan will be considered in June.
It does not include any additional money from increased motor vehicle fees approved this year by the Legislature. Officials will look at those funds this fall.
The plan would expand U.S. Highway 20 almost to Sac City by 2012. It also includes funds for a bypass loop around Tama on U.S. 30, a bypass of Fort Madison on U.S. 61 and a new bridge on U.S. 34 over the Missouri River in Mills County.
It sets aside $185 million in 2009 and $170 million in subsequent years for Iowa's interstate highways. For other highways, the plan would spend $114 million in 2009, $100 million in 2010 and $90 million in later years.

Finally reality sets in....instead of senseless growth the State is now finally having to fund maintainance that has been long overlooked. Senseless projects like the 100 Hwy extention are DOA.

"does not include money from increased motor vehicle fees..." Why not? Where is that money going? Oh yeah - pork barrel projects. Finishing Hwy 30 would be nice. So would repairing all the damage from this past winter. With all the taxes we pay, why aren't these in the 5-year plan? Chet, we have a problem.
