DES MOINES (AP) - A baby girl born at an Iowa hospital last month is in state custody under Iowa's safe haven law.

The baby was born about 5 weeks premature on April 24. Roger Munns of the Iowa Department of Human Services says the mother left the hospital soon after delivery and requested the baby be a safe haven child.

Munns says officials waited to release information about the child because someone called the hospital and asked about the baby shortly after she was born. No information was provided and there has been no other contact.

This is the tenth time a baby has been protected under the law since it was passed in 2001. It allows unwanted babies 14 days or younger to be left at any medical facility with no questions asked.
