When Rev. Hanus became archbishop of Dubuque about 12 years ago, he assumed spiritual leadership of 220,000 Catholics in northeast Iowa. There were nearly 220 parishes. Today, he leads 213,000 faithful. Thirty-seven parishes closed or consolidated along with a number of schools. (AP Photo/The Courier, Matthew Putney)
DUBUQUE - Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus is calling for immigration reform after Monday's raid.
Postville is part of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
Hanus says the Catholic church is urging lawmakers to create safe legal ways for immigrants to come into the country, where families are treated humanely.
He says the Catholic church does not condone illegal activity, but it does offer moral and spiritual guidance.
