Rep. Braley Pushing For President To Help Lower Gas Prices
WASHINGTON - Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley (D-1st District) is calling on President Bush to make a move that might help lower gas prices.
It's a plan in Congress for the President to temporarily suspend oil purchases for the strategic petroleum reserve. That's the nation's emergency petroleum stockpile. Last month, the Congressman agreed to support the bill that would suspend further purchases. Rep. Braley says a vote could come Tuesday night. |

Hey liberals that think Bush did this all, you need to study up a little. Congress and Senate rule the country more than the President does. The president can VETO things if needed. Next: The stock market crash created this crisis, NOT Bush. Oh and by the way, the crash happened at the end of the CLINTON regime. You want to know when the 'highest' gas prices came into effect? Look at the gas increases in the last two years since our Congress and Senate became Democratic....that is your answer.

It's YOUR fellow Dems in Washington that promised they would SOLVE the gas price problem as soon as they wrestled control of Congress away for those silly Republicans. Pelosi & Co, along with many Dem govenors, have been in power for TWO YEARS - yet gas prices have gone EVEN HIGHER! You Dems have had the clout to solve the problem without any action needed by the Prez ... yet all you do is complain. Please tell us: why have you done NOTHING to help ???

Drill in Alaska, its the democrats, its the republicans, who cares whos fault it is we need to find something else to use besides gas. The technology is there why don't we use it? Gas prices will not go down there is to much money to be made from it.

Before 9/11 gas was $1.74 When the dems took over congress in Jan of '07 gas was $2.33. Today it is $3.73 national avg. If my math is right gas went up $.59 cents in 5 1/2 when the Republicans were in contol. Now since the dems are in control gas has risen over $1.40 in less than 2 years and it's all Bushes fault. Get a CLUE.

Well friend with a better sense, your dems have virtually all the powers in Washington to make better laws and to lower the prices. Why are they doing nothing. So if Obama gets elected what will gas be lowered to since these rising prices are all bushes fault? Any answers because I would love to hear them

Wow! I am amazed at all of blaming. Democrats v.s. Republicans, why don't we just go back to North v.s. South and start another Civil War. Maybe everyone should stop bickering and realize that nothing is going to be solved arguing over pointless accusations. Gas prices aren't going to go back to $.99/gal. no matter what we do. We need to concentrate on finding a better way. Something we've had the knowledge to do for years but didn't act on it. We could have avoided this situation altogether.

Your friend with a better sense wrote gas has gone up .70 every summer since bush has been President. That means gas would of cost $0.00 when he took office. Don't just make up numbers and have nothing to back them up with... Here's a number you can deal with. In 2001 before 9/11 gas here was 1.74 a gallon. In 2008 it's now at 3.52 a gallon and rising as we speak. Too bad it was 0.00 as you got your facts all messed up. Glad you voted for Bush, so we have this high gas prices.

lbj and vietnam 8 years of republicans to try to fix that mess. oh then we have carter. he did enough damage in 4 years to last 20 years, which was just about fixed by reagan and bush sr but then clinton came in and created things like NAFTA, and decided it would be a good idea not to kill Bin Laden when we had him in our sites, literally. in the 80's gas prices 1.10 gal. same for the 90's but clinton used all the reserves to accomplish that and we justed fixed that. Dems are great NOT!!!

They made promises that if we elected them they would lower gasoline cost and I ask Where is that plan? Dems will say anything to get elected. Wake up America!

Ok, so lets see---then the oil exporting countries or terror groups disrupt oil supplies -- and Iran, Al-Qaeda and the holy rag head uprising rears up its ugly head and guess what? Think you have high prices now? Let us get bogged down in intensified conflict or war and have our reserves quickly depleted with supplies disrupted…oh yea – real smart move Senators. Yup Al Qaeda and Iran’s leaders are much smarter than any American Senator!

Apperently you forgot about the 12 years prior to Clinton, the Regan/Bush years? Yeah thought so, gas was also at an all time high during Bush Sr. years too. I am not sure what cave you were living in during the Clinton years, but I never paid 2 dollars a gallon, let alone possibly 4! This idea that the "rebublicans" have to fix what the dems break, is a loosing argument, first 12 years now 8 years and each time the economy is worse than when they started. Get OIL men out period, thats the all!

killing off the SPR aint going to do ANYTHING to drop the price, in fact may even drive it higher as speculators build fears of oil shortages and bid the futures price up higher than it is now on the fear of a disruption. Braley, plug your brain back in and USE it. Upgrade our existing Refineries = YES Build a bunch more refineries = YES Drill in ANWR, North Dakota and off our coasts =YES do those three you get more supply price drops.. but the dems wont do that. makes too much sense.

Like always the Democrat party is looking for something people can worry about. They won't solve anything, just play on peoples concerns. They don't have one plan to get more oil in the market. They shut down production of oil refineries, production of nuclear power plants, and drilling off of the coasts. It'll be funny when Cuba strikes it rich drilling 50 miles off of FL coast. Even though the dems won't allow US companies to drill within 100 miles. Such a party, only out for themselves.

Give me a break. Ever since Bush became president, the prices have gone up every summer by about 70 cents. Somebody should have thought about conserving gas when it was a dollar a gallon. But then again the bright idea was to build Hummers. Yep, great gas efficent they sure are...not. And Oil Presidents make lousy presidents.

Liberals dont think they just do things. Then republicans have to come in and spend 8 years trying to fix there mistakes which costs lots of money and drives up the national debt. People get made at that and vote in a liberal and the cycle keeps going and going. Worst president ever was Clinton (boo hiss). Thats why its taking more than 8 years to fix his mess. Just let us fix the liberal mistakes for once and we will be better off. no reserves bad idea, more drilling and refineries good!!

It is the right time for all of us to think more green and get rid of the oil cartels all togeather. We need all concerned to manufacture hydro cars and trucks and electric vechiles and get them at lower prices then we pay for autos now. No more gas cars and trucks. We have the know how and technology. Stop supporting them. Find ways to car pool and drive only when you have too. We can drive the cost the other way if we all pull togeather as a whole. We need change. Thanks for listening

Listen to all the democrates blaming Bush for high oil prices. People who dont understand politics should educate themselves before speaking. OPEC, hello people our neighbors to the north supply us with the vast majority of our oil. Force refinery building and open anwar to drilling, and maybe even put a cap on the price of gasoline. The oil companies made 40 billion last year when the price of a gallon was over $2. Cap the Price at $1.50 and do what i said above, then work on new sources.
Tuesday, May 13 at 1:33 PM your friend wrote ...
Since the Dems have been in control of both the house and senate gas prices have skyrocketed. More refineries and more drilling will get us off foreign oil and that is the only way the gas prices will come down. Liberals do your research and stop blaming everything on Bush.

The price for gas will drop sharply if a Democrat gets elected in november. That is IF we can have an honest election this time around. Look at the charts showing gas prices under republicans and democrats over the last 40 years, it will surprise you.

The Democrats just voted down a provision that would allow drilling in the Gulf. See a story on cnnfn.com discussing this vote. If the Democrats really want to lower oil/gas prices, they would allow us to drill in ANWAR and the Gulf. Apparently, the democrats are just playing a political game of smoke and mirrors. Act like they are concerned with oil prices, but don't do anything substantial to help. Stopping shipments to the reserve will not do anything to lower oil prices. Drilling will.

JUDY - Get your facts straight. Clinton's plan was senseless, it would only knock off 18 cents a gallon until Labor Day. We need more of a drop in price than that.

In response to Judy, Obama is against Clinton's idea of the gas tax holiday because ultimately, it will save you only $30-$50. Obama wants to fix things permanently, not temporarily. Everything with Bush is temporary fix this, temporarily stimulate our economy. We need a president who will fix things the right way!

Less than a drop in the ocean. This is pure political bologna. We need more drilling (less reliance on OPEC) and more refineries, and the dear representative keeps voting against those measures. HE is part of the probelm. Disturbed: Wake up. When you are made president your financial assets are seized, liquidated, and managed for you by a comitee outside your control or even view. The president doesn't know what he has, and so can't favor his own investments. Stop drinking the koolade.

Drill in Alaska! We have plenty of our own oil that we could be living on. I hope prices can come down, but the reason they are not isn't due to big oil. OPEC is the major cause our problems with oil costs. Bush is meeting with OPEC in the coming week, if he can convince them to increase productions, relief will come swiftly. I'm not holding my breath though; OPEC has practiced a blatantly anti-American policy for a very long time. Have a nice day.

Now if we could get Braley to vote to open ANWAR for oil exploration. We need to find long term solutions to oil dependency, opening ANWAR would help in the short term.
