Waterloo Approves Coal-Fired Power Plant Plans
WATERLOO - Waterloo city leaders have cleared the way for a coal-fired power plant in Black Hawk County.
On Monday night, the City Council approved the third and final reading of an ordinance to annex and rezone about 260 acres of land. It's where L.S. Power wants to build the 750 megawatt plant. L-S Power can now apply to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for approval. Waterloo Mayor Tim Hurley says that process could take up to a year. If the DNR also approves the proposal, the city could see more public hearings before the Iowa Utilities Board makes a final decision. |

There are actually ways to clean the air released from the coal plants with units called SCR(Selective catalytic Reduction) which take out the Nitrouos oxide and FGD(Flue Gas Desulfurization) units which capture the Sulfur Oxides. Also there are things called baghouses that capture the Mercury. Large power plants are all starting to introduce these units and make the air cleaner. Overall coal is still the largest source of energy in our country and will conitnue to be that way for years to come

I can't stand electricity. It is created by burning coal to turn generators and then sold at a huge profit to us. I swithed to natural gas and am using a wood burning boiler (and new 97% gas furnace) to keep my house warm and hot water hot. Do your part to cut down on electricity.

Wrong Direction, Coal is a great energy source and it can be done very cleanly. To turn your back on fossil fuels would be a major error. Global Warming is a HOAX! There is no conclusive evidence, and there is no consensus among scientists, even though the people pushing it black ball those who don't concur. There is no reason to think this plant will be obsolete anytime soon. It sounds like a great idea; it will certainly help the state financially. And no, it won't hurt it ecologically.

With Iowa trying hard to focus on making the world a better place with renewable energy, Waterloo basically gives the state of Iowa a shrug to the shoulders. They may say that it's about the jobs that they need, but going green also brings jobs. Why build a coal plant that's going to be obsolete in just a few years? You'll also be losing those jobs, too. People say that wind isn't reliable forgetting that other windmills will cover for those that are windless. Electric grid is connected.

And why is it we continue to keep investing tax dollars into fossil fuels with all the problems we have with them today? Glad to see with all the evidence of global warming we continue to invest to make problems worse for all!
