Dubuque Teen Recovering After 80-Foot Fall off Cliff

DUBUQUE (AP) - Officials say a Dubuque teenager was injured after falling about 80 feet from a cliff.

Authorities say Gregory Klauer, 17, and another teen were walking in the Mines of Spain area near Dubuque on Sunday when they went off the trail to the edge of the bluff. Klauer crawled over the edge and slipped. He fell about 80 feet and ended up next to a tree.

Klauer was taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. He was listed in stable condition on Sunday. The hospital had no immediate update on his condition on Monday.

The incident remains under investigation.

How many of us were never seventeen? I thought I was immortal back then, and this is precisely the type of thing I would have done. It really doesn't sound like he was doing anything malicious. With age, hopefully, comes wisdom. Let's not jump all over this young man for exorcising some poor judgment. He took an unnecessary chance and is unfortunately having to face the consequences. I hope he has a speedy recovery. Have a nice day.

I think we should just pad and cusion the entire world. That way these poor children won't ever get hurt! Won't someone please think of the children? We don't need more signs or more fences!

I cant believe people are being so mean about what happened to him. People make mistakes and bad things happen to good people. I am praying for him and his family...

Also many kids go out to the mines to smoke ganja. not saying that is what happened, but people should use extreme caution when hiking near bluff/cliffs. Hopefully this guy is okay.

I'd think the fact that you can't see the ground ahead of you and climbing over the edge is the issue, guardrails wouldn't do anything more than add a few more feet to the fall.

I've climbed those bluffs many times with no problems, this kid probably went around the chain link fence to access the bluff. there are signs posted of the danger but yet these young kids just don't get it.
