CEDAR RAPIDS - A car with stolen plates accelerates from Cedar Rapids Police during an attempted stop Friday night.

The pursuit went south on Williams Blvd. SW to Highway 30 westbound, just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

The chase came to an end when the driver, Bret Scheidt, failed to make a turn at the Highway 30 westbound off ramp at 80th St. SW.

The car ended up in an adjacent field.

Scheidt attempted to run, but was quickly apprehended. He faces eluding, two outstanding warrants, miscellaneous traffic offenses and 5th degree theft charges.

Officers also found items associated with manufacturing methamphetamine.

Those items are currently in the custody of the Cedar Rapids Police Department's Narcotics Bureau.

Hey... I was on Williams about to go to the HWY 30 West Exit to go home, when this guy and the CRPD officer came flying around me. Funny thing was, this guy used his turn signal to turn onto the HWY 30 exit.

So you're saying we shouldn't have plates on cars. Oh, that makes sense. So when someone who drives the same type and color of car as someone else commits a crime, like say assault, robbery, whatever, then the police will have to question EVERY person in the area who has that type of car, including yourself. Yes the justice system has it's flaws, but the CRPD and Police departments accross the country do their best to enforce the laws and keep everyone safe.

laws such as license plates, if we did not need license plates he would not have needed to steal them. there are are too many laws, let's start from scratch.

CRPD should slow down to conserve gas. Taxpayers will be happy.

Wow some of you just don't get it. And how would the Linn County Sheriff arrest CRPD I don't think they make handcuffs big enough for that building. Now there may be one or two CRPD OFFICERS that should be arrested but the whole building?

So...making it illegal to steal somebody's license plates constitutes "too many laws"? Or is it the running from the police part? Or the traffic violations part? Inquiring minds would love to know!

i also have lost faith in the justice system, we have too many laws, so we are all criminals.

If you people really wanted to stop crime - the Linn County Sheriff should arrest CRPD.

Why do people run? Don't they know it only adds to their problems... not to mention the fact that they could injure or kill an innocent bystander, a police officer, or themself. Hopefully the judge in this case will want to make an example out of this guy.
