5-year-old Survives being Tossed from Car in Accident

By Becky Ogann

DUBUQUE - A crash Thursday night threw a 5-year-old boy from his father's car.

Dubuque police say the driver ran a stop sign at the intersection of Booth and West Third streets. Another car hit it, sending the first car sliding into a curb. That impact ejected the driver's son.

Police don't believe the boy's injuries are serious.

They charged the father with failure to obey a stop sign and failure to properly secure the child.

Again this just shows you that our court systems overlook the most obvious and are basically letting him go with a slap on the wrist! The little guy could've been killed! his papa should've known better! He was risking his sons and his own life... This really saddens me that a grown man with no liseces would still have the intensions of driving especailly with his little boy! Someone was deffently watching the little guy!

for all of you saying that seatbelts are 'death traps' if Crystal Carson, the fourteen year old that died in anamosa this summer, had been wearing her seatbelt she would have lived to start high school, go to homecoming, go to prom, and go with her team to state cheer and dance. we've had our fair share of accidents in anamosa and most have them could have been A LOT worse if people weren't wearing seatbelts. and A LOT would have had a better outcome if people were wearing their seatbelts.

The whole thing happened because he failed to stop at a Stop Sign. How simple is that? And because of that he also involved another party in his irresponsability by hitting their vehicle. And yes he did not have a license "no driver's license and expired registration" -the Gazette. Debate all you want about the Safety Belt- For me the issue is he never should have been on the road to begin with.

It's incredibly reckless to say that seatbelts do not save lives. It is true that seatbelts can cause complications that in some cases result in deaths, but the bottom line is that seatbelts DO save lives and to say otherwise is absolutely reckless.

there is a seatbelt law for a reason. there are times that someone could have lived if they weren't wearing one, but there are more people killed when they aren't. the dad should be cited for endagering the child. i am glad to know the child will be ok.

Wouldn't you rather be in the car than tossed out onto the road where you can get ran over or have the car roll over you? I am sure seatbelts have killed people too, but those people might have died either way. Seatbelts are meant to save lives and it it a parents duty to buckle them in right.

First, thank God this child was not injuried seriously. Hope everyone who commented on the car/creek accident and felt that seatbelts were stupid read this story. A perfect example of why seatbelts are so important. Had the child been secured he would have never left the car. Think of how tragic this could have been. Numbers prove that seatbelts save lives, why must some of you fight that logic. I don't agree with "nanny laws" but many of you wouldn't use common sense unless forced.
