Rail Car Tips Over in Garden in Mason City

By Becky Ogann

MASON CITY (AP) - A rail car that tipped over in Mason City missed the house, but it took out the garden.

The car on the Iowa Chicago & Easter Railroad train derailed Thursday morning in Velma Tschetter's yard, crushing lilac bushes and tomato plants.

Tschetter says she and her mother heard a thump about 7:30 a.m.

They looked out the window and saw the rail car in her garden, about 15 feet from a storage shed and 30 feet from her house.

Railroad spokesman Jafar Karim says the car contained soybean meal. He says the cause of the derailment is under investigation, and IC&E will work with Tschetter to assess property damage.
